I was seriously thinking about this idea, I made a post here on AO year or two ago, but nobody was able to really confirm it was doable.
the con rods are the same ..u need crankshaft from 1.8 and piston shorter at Comp.Height ,u can get it from Wossner.

Re: Tuning a 1.6?

About turning a 1.6 to a 1.8: It cannot be done using only stock parts. I have tried it using a 1.8 crankshaft, conrods and pistons but the TDC gets about 6mm higher than where it should be. This probably has to do with the fact that the late 1.6TS blocks are about 3cm shorter than the 1.8/2.0TS ones.

The other option is to find a set of shorter aftermarket pistons but IMHO they will be so expensive that the cost of the whole upgrade will be very close to that of a full 2.0 engine swap.

Re: Tuning a 1.6?

Thank you for info. The 2,0 swap with 1,6 gearbox (maybe with longer 5th gear) seams most attractive to me. I thought about 1,8 conversion because my engine is in top condition and I have a lot of trust in it. When I swap a 2,0 I buy somewhere I can never be sure what I am getting unless I do a complete engine rebuild what is pricey.
