fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
Everyone seems to reccomend the BMC carbon jobbie for my 156 V6. I thought I would try something different and bought a universal steel mesh induction with a massive filter. Managed to get it fitted today with the help of my mechanic steve - top man. My v6 sounds amazing! I am loving it. Just need to find a decent tunnel now...

Sounds good, got a BMC CDA myself, just hope you made sure to let her run without the MAF installed to suck off any excess oil..

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
I got the filter from motor world. Its a universal jobbie yes. I didnt want an enclosed filter and the only kit I could find made for the car was the BMC one which looks amazing but cost around 200...
I have some of the original pipework but have binned the resonator. The trickiest part was getting the original air box out. Had to remove the mud guard.
Let the car run without the MAF??? Will it run without it? Just stalls?

well is there n e chance ov a photo?
lol
on my 2.0 ts theres the rubbery pipe corners rnd frm the engine then attaces to the MAF.the other side of the MAF is a large bent bit ov piping leading to the airbox.
n e info n removing da airbox ...ive already moved the resonator.

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
I will try and take some photos of what I have done but might not be able to do it until Tue...
Prob best to put photos up they show how I did it a bit better I think.
Is the 2.0 litre air box mounted the same as the v6 right at the front left of the car?

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
Dont need to run it without the MAF as it is stainless mesh it isnt oiled.
I have a BMC sat here wating to be fitted but I too was thinking about a stainless mesh one because of the whole oil and Maf thing had one on the Evo for a while and they do sound good dont they.
Good on you for doing something different.
By the way did you install a cold air feed? Need to look at the GTV to see if I can sort something out.

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
Thanks for the comment Arthur. Yes, mesh filters do sound fantastic. The car has a lovely growl in the lower rev band. I have used part of the standard air box as a temporary air feed but plan to put some piping in and run it from the orginal box to the new filter.
S-lover. Ur air box sounds like its mounted in the same place. I will try and take some pics for you but I think the best way to get the standard box out is to jack the car and remove the mud guard that way once its been unbolted you should be able to drop it out.

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
BMC CDA sounds awesome but then so does a K&N in an enclosed space
Thats for clarifying Arthur regarding the oil, didn't realise stainless mesh filters weren't oiled.

On the post reply there should be a tab called manage attachments, open that and upload them.

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
I have attached the MAF pipe direct to the filter and plugged the MAF back in. It sits snug but it does fit and I like it! It gives a real growl in the lower rev band. Upon opening the old air box it had an auto delta cone filter fitted. Anyone know if these are any good?

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
It leaves a massive hole! If you were to lift it out I think you would have to remove the fuse box. Im going to run some piping from the front of the engine through this gap to the kit try and get it some cold air.

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
Uhmmmm... fitting a funnel-type filter that close to the MAF is a sure way to ruin it (the MAF), it's just a matter of days. This has happened many times to TS engines, not sure about V6's though.

Thats the only problem I see with your set up at the moment. Its going to sound absolutely awesome with that short intake pipe and open cone filter, but its going to be sucking in masses of hot air whether you fit a cold air feed or not.. It would be better if you could fit the cone filter where the old airbox was, with a cold air feed, and maybe also try and get a heat shield around..

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
Yep, aggree with the above, I would put the filter down the front where the airbox was and get a cold air feed onto it, thats what I intend to do (so it must be right )

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
Also, whats going to be the effect of such a short intake pipe on torque low down in the rev range? I know theory says it should drop, but will it drop by a noticeable amount?

More important to this is the length of individual pipes/trumpets from the plenum behind the throttle body to the valves. The length of the intake pipe before throttle body has some effect as well, but much less.
I would be a little worried about MAF directly after the cone filter; the turbulences could MAYBE influence its reading a little. But this doesn’t mean it’s necessarily wrong. A little different reading from the MAF might improve performance as well as deteriorate, who knows.

As long as it still has the mesh guard behind this should help somewhat to reduce turbulence..

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
I am watching with interest, I had looked at these filters in Motorworld, and they seemed too good/cheap to be true, but I can't see how they couldn't be good....
I was planning on a slightly different installation, as I had planned to remove the entire bottom of the air box and then mount the cone filter.
Is there anywhere else you could mount the filter? It is kinda tight under the bonnet, under the passenger wing?

Re: fitted induction kit today... woo hoo
I have the mesh guard fitted after the filter before the maf. I cannot see why shortening the pipes would destroy the MAF??? I have to be honest, I have noticed no difference in performance. Just a much better sound. However, my car now idles better. Before with the standard box fitted it was hunting around ever so slightly. Now it just sits dead steady. Jason, they do seem too good to be true. I had a look at the filter in the store and it seems very similiar quality to a K&N filter. The bloke in the store told me the only major difference is that you dont pay for the name. From what I can see it is possible to mount the cone where the standard box sits. This would keep it colder and get a lot more air flow to it. Im more into the sound the engine makes rather than all out performance so im happy with the set up I have for the time being
