Painting the Black bits !

Is it accepted or common practice to when colour co-ordinating mirrors and skirts to paint the black plastic trim on the front bumper where the washers are (on a 156) and the black strip on the rear bumper.

Obviously not an issue on a black car but howzabout on a silver one - or is that going to far etc?

Not at all. The revision of the 156 in 2002 had this colour coded anyway. Just make sure you get a good job done!

Re: Painting the Black bits !

the black bits on the bumper are painted black, so changing to silver is easy.

The mirrors are a pain, you need to remove the glass, then get a good few coats of a 1k plastic primer, then std primer, then base coat, then laquar.
If its a solid colour you can go 1k plastic primer then 2-pack, but colour match is not always great and your is silver anyway!
