Fuel consumption was 28.4 which is OK at best though (average speed 68mph but c90 most of the time).

Yes, my GTA matches the 2.2 on one of my regular journeys (about 28mpg typically - Mway and A roads).
I agree with you about the performance, once you're used to exploiting the engine, it's quite adequate. Standing start feels poor, but I always find in gear performance, overtaking for example, not an issue at all.
