After market air filter

Anyone changed their standard GTV (2.0TS) air filter for an after market one, was it an improvement or did it cause problems?

Re: After market air filter

Mine had a K & N filter on when I bought it and certainly has not caused me any problems. Sounds better too.

Re: After market air filter

Bought a Maxx Air by Novitec (stupid) Noisy and thats about it, then got a BMC CDA ok but very expensive and looked c*ap under the bonnet of a GTV.Bought a K&N and fitted a stainless tube inplace of the resinator box and gave almost the same response of the BMC.Much cheaper also

That is how i see it,although others will swear by the BMC.I just dont think the BMC is worth about £180.It's not like i havent bought one either because i did, but it's up to you

What made me take off the BMC was mainly the look of it under the bonnet. It just looked scrapy, You couldent see the carbon fibre case as it was stuck down where the origional box sits. Also it looked lost under there. So i fitted a K&N direct replacment filter into the origional housing.Straight away i noticed a lack of response.I then removed the resinator box and put in a 6" stainless tube. The throttle response was again greatly improved and the Torque i had lost regained.I will look at the intake pipe in the summer and try to increase air flow to see if that makes a bigger improvment.

Re: After market air filter

Watch yourself with after market oil based filters as they can kill you MAF if not run in properly. I think the standard advice is to run the car for about 30 mins with the MAF disconnected to get rid of any oil residue.

Re: After market air filter

Hi mate,

be wary of the K&N filters apparently they have excess oil when new and cause problems with your MAF.

I installed a BMC one and its great. Induction sound is greater, performance wise like with most filters no significant difference (thats what the exhaust is for!

Cheers Josh

Re: After market air filter

hello Alfie GTV,

Can you please enlighten me here, how do you connect your home made air filter? I'm fairly good at DIY stuff and want to change my standard set up providing it doesn't cause any damage elsewhere.
Do you have pictures of your set up? How could i find out if other brands are oil based or not?
Thanks, Wingy.

Hi Wingyfan.Your's is a V6 so will be different from mine. The air filter is'nt home made just part of the induction. There is an Autodelta kit for the V6 which i would go for if i had one.It has a carbon fibre induction tube with a high flow 'non oiled'filter. Here are a before and after pic's of what i did:

I will be looking at some point at replacing the stainless pipe and extending it all the way down to the MAF, and improve the intake pipe Hope this helps

Not a good pic but here's the link for the V6 filter/carbon pipe:
