Nice SE Android Update Message

Just got a nice update notification direct to the phone from SE.


Android 2.3.4


Sony Ericsson Rolling Out Android 2.3.4 To Xperia Range


Sweep panorama function on the camera looks interesting.

Video calls finally enabled.

Installed it last week on my Xperia Play, seems good but they change the nice CRT power off animation which was annoying as it was one of those features that ever one goes ooooh! when they see it, odd but true

Do you know if you're going to be getting Andriod Corn Beef Sandwich (or whatever it's called) when it's released???

SE Seem to give you one decent upgrade before calling it a day.


So 1.6 (Doughnut)-> 2.1 (Eclair)

2.2 (Froyo) -> 2.3 (Gingerbread)

I doubt they'll give us Ice Cream Wafer for the phones
released with 1.6, 2.1 or 2.2.

Although they do seem to release the minor updates.

Only just noticed the missing CRT white line/dot screen-off is missing.

LG are just about to release 2.3 for their top of the range phones, will need to wait till the 28th, they are so damn slow

What I like is the notification message and over-the-air update without any need
to connect the phone to a PC.

I dont get how to update mine. Every time i have tried it still says its running 1.6

I don't think OTA worked until 2.1

Try downloading the Update Service program from the
website instead.

Be aware that for 1.6 -> 2.1 you'll probably lose
all your apps and have to re-install everything.
(Back-up all your contacts too. e.g. via Google.)

What do you get in 2.whatever that you dont get on 1.6?

Not that major from 1.6-2.1 to be fair.
Better bluetooth support and changes to menus/bundled software.


2.2 brought in all the nice stuff like using the phone as a modem (inc as a WiFi hotspot)
installing apps on the SD card, Flash support etc.
SE Specific: 4 app icons per corner is neat.


SE's Camera and Music player has steadily improved from one version to the next.

I think i'll probably just plod along on 1.6 and look at the Xperia Ray. That looks a nice phone

It's a cool feature indeed. Funnily enough I woke up this morning to find both my iPhone and iPad with a message telling me iOS 5.01 is ready for OTA install. Along with out of the box wireless content syncing to my Mac and iCloud I think this is the best new feature in iOS5.

There's a good Android app called Doubletwist which enables the latter on Android.

From what I have read with the older OS on SE phones all the timescape style crap was tightly integrated into the OS which made updating the phones really difficult, with the later releases SE have decoupled their skinning from the OS, in theory this should mean almost immediate updates.

So they may continue to release updates if it is indeed now easier to do so, they don't seem to have a rampant phone release schedule so updates should keep the handsets current.

I'd imagine all the 2011 handsets would get an update as they have the appropriate hardware.
