PS3 YLOD + stuff on hard drive

Suffered the old YLOD a few weeks ago, fixed it, and now it gone again. So iv been out and bought a new one.

My problem is i have had to set up a new PSN user, as my last one used an email address i no longer have, i didnt know the password.

If i was to sell my old ps3 for spares and someone got it working again, would they be able to log in as me and buy a load of stuff over PSN on my card?!
It was set to automatically sign in when switched on...

Cheers all
Kev

I presume that all that data is stored on the harddrive, therefore as you will sell it for "spares or repairs" it would be best to sell it without the drive.

I would've thought they've got a lost password service.

The ps3 has a standard laptop hard drive in it that's easily accessed. Get the hd out and connect it to one of those USB cradles and you can move everything onto your computer to add to the new drive when you get it.

After that if you're worried about sensitive data sell sans hard drive as mentioned above.

PS3 drive data can't be read on a PC

I'd get the machine working again and wipe it.

As an interim, why don't you swap out the old HDD and put it the new PS3, then try and recover your details. Once you've got access to your old account again, swap the drives back, wipe the old drive and enjoy any returns you make with the sale.

(I know you say you've lost access to you email provider, but I'm sure there must be a way of changing the email once you've logged into your account - which you say is set to automatic?)

I did think about that.. Im not sure if the harddrives are the same connection?
Plus accessing the new one will remove the sticker and invalidate the warranty i think...

The PS3 was designed with upgrades in mind. Both the fat and the slim use the SATA II connection and are easily removed from the Playstation via a few screws and clip that allows you to slide the caddy across and out.

There should be no warranty stickers on the Hard Drive housing on the outside or inside of the case. Sony even had a link on the website demonstrating how to change the drives. They even allowed you to install different flavours of Linux, which was a great addition until Firmware Patch 3.xx came along and they decided to stop you doing that (Presumably, people were using 'homebrew' to crack the copy protection and pirate games)

Anyway, I digress. I have upgraded my old Fat 60Gb to 320Gb and the new slim with a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue. Ideal if you have Play TV and want to keep various TV series stored.
