Sometimes even if you have the little 3G icon and a plenty of signal the speed is slower than it can be. Or maybe that's just O2?

It depends on available bandwidth and number of other network users in the vicinity I believe. Which is probably the same thing said in two different ways.

Ah, the old Contention Ratio...

I do feel that O2's data performance in general is pretty poor.
Here's a Speedtest.net app result which I've just run. 4 bars out of 5 on 3G.

I would say for 3G, that is fairly good.
The absolute theoretical maximum download speed on '3G' (UMTS) is 3.6mbps and on 'H' (HSPDA) it is 7.2mbps.

BUT I WANT THE MAXIMUM.

Seriously though, it's more to do with the way it delivers the information rather than the max speed. Often it will just sit there spinning away, thinking about loading the site or information for ages and then it will all suddenly appear. It did the same on the Speedtest which showed it in a data vs time chart.

Depends on the data too.

I can run a Citrix session doing all sorts of fancy **** over
UMTS with little issue on bandwidth or latency.
