Help S4 Spider electric window

Hi
Electric window goes down - won't go up (without manual intervention) - just sort of buzzes and then stops. About to take the door panel off - any hints or tips before I go at it like an idiot?

Re: S4 Spider electric window

From looking at the workshop manual I would suggest you take quite a few digital pictures of the layout of the cables that move the window....before you take it apart..... it looks quite complicated :xmas:

and from my experience... clean all the (dis)connectors... and switch contacts before looking at the mechanical bits :xmas: :xmas:

S4's are notorious for bad connections, like GJ said. Clean them up first and then see what you've got. :xmas:

Re: S4 Spider electric window

Hi, it sounds like the same problem I had with the S3 I bought last summer.
It has S4 door panels and I assume the same window winding mechanism.

I removed the door panel and found the back cable had an outer sleeve to help direct the inner cable towards the winding drum on the motor. The outer sleeve had become detached and when the window was going down, the cable and sleeve were going round the drum. As they went round the cable got tighter and tighter. With gravity and the tight cable, the window would not go up without assistance and the motor did as you described.

I fixed the outer sleeve back in the correct position with two plastic cable ties and have had no more problems.

Regards

Re: S4 Spider electric window

Just to update this problem in case anyone searches the forum: - in my case the problem was solved by tightening the nuts that attach the cable to the window pane.

For some reason the cable was slipping through the clamping mechanism. There seems to be some natural travel of the cable from fully up to fully down. I pressed the down button to let the window come down (which due to gravity it was happy to do) and kept on the down button whilst the cable slipped - until the motor stopped winding. I then tightened the two nuts and - hey presto the window goes up and down like a charm. I'm just relieved it wasn't an electrical fault.

Also make sure you tuck the black plastic sheet well inside the door. If you don't the side pockets will fill with water!
