Help Replacing Spider Clutch

Hi,

Probably been asked before

I'm planning to replace my slipping clutch in the New Year on my 1986 S3.

Does the engine have to be removed before being able to get at the clutch?

I am looking at all options from DIY to specialist garage.

Any other pitfalls / points to mention? (including the obvious, as I am unskilled so far).

Thanks in advance.

Re: Replacing Spider Clutch

My specialist says it's a gearbox out job, not an engine out job but that sounds a nasty proposition without a decent garage setup i.e. a four post lift!

Re: Replacing Spider Clutch

Had the clutch replaced in my '76 Spider about a year ago.I think it is very similar to the S3.Feeling very brave I decided to do it myself. After 2 days took it to an Alfa garage! You need to be double jointed and have pencil-like arms to remove the starter-motor,the propshaft is not much of a problem but try and remove the bolts on the bellhousing! When you finaly manage to do it (bleeding from every knuckle on your hands)TRY and slide the gearbox off!!!Their is just no way in hell it comes off because of a lack of space.
DO YOURSELF A BIG FAVOUR,LET AN ALFA GARAGE DO IT.
Make sure it is someone that has done Alfa clutches before, couple of years ago I took her to a "normal" garage. The car returned with a cracked bellhousing.
Best of luck!

Re: Replacing Spider Clutch

I agree with the others. I took the engine and box out because I needed to change the clutch and to correct an oil leak on either the rear crank seal or the gearbox oil seal. Pig of a job, but it must be preferable to trying to just take out the box. Don't get any ideas about being able to lift the box back into place on it's own by lying underneath on your back either, unless you want some sick leave!
If you take out the engine and gearbox at home, I suggest you check on the length of reach of the hoist. The long nose of the car means that many hoists aren't long enough, and if you then take off the front bumper to compensate, you could damage the front if the hoist rolls towards the car. If possible, also use a tilt mechanism on the hoist to help tip the engine to the correct angle for putting it back in.
