'76 spider aircleaner
I am considering replacing the aircleaner assembly with a sport aircleaner.Question-(1)Their is no support for the weber carbs if I replace the original "box",will it have an effect on the rubber carb-intakes because of the weight of the carbs?
(2)Do the carbs have to be adjusted?
(3)Are their any major advantages?

Re: '76 spider aircleaner
I have never done the conversion but have spoken to various people who have.
The first thing to do is to count up the cost of the conversion and then compare that to the benefits. The benefit being a better breathing engine and therefore a few more bhp.
In theory you will need to inform your insurance company as it will be deemed a modification.
To answer your questions, a bracket will be necessary to support the carbs and you should re-tune the carbs to gain the maximum benefit.
All the best.

Thanx for the advice, when I replaced the Dellortos with Webers it came with sports filters.Metal casing with re-washable filters.I moved to Portugal quite recently, finding an air-filter is really a problem because everything has to be imported. If you manage to find it,the cost is high.I did change to electronic ignition about 10 years ago and have not had one bit of problem.

Yes, a support plate, like this one, is mandatory if you want the car to run right and have the carb mounts last any length of time.
The down side to aftermarket filters is that the airflow into the carbs is changed and the induction of hot engine bay air can effect performance. The best setup is stacks in a cold airbox.

Thanx for the advice,You say the hot engine air has an effect on performance. What if I run a tube from the standard air-box to the nose of my spider.Keeping it out of sight, would their be any effect on the performance?

Re: '76 spider aircleaner
I'm surprised that your Spider doesn't already have this tube from the factory.
Put simply, cold air is more dense than hot air. Hence, more oxygen=more power.

They never fitted it on UK RHD cars unfortunately. They just tend to have a filter canister with a hole in the side rather than a ram pipe.

The other thing to bear in mind for the original poster is how much noise the carbs make without the big factory airbox. This may or may not appeal!!

The "noise" is great, would it make sense to fit a rampipe?Where should it end?

I know this pic is from a GT but it gives you an idea of what the LHD air boxes were like:

Can you see the long trumpet coming off the end of the airbox and heading down towards the back of the lights? That was the standard LHD fitment. For some reason the RHDs didn't get these and had a relocated expansion tank right in the way of where you would want to put the ram pipe. If you haven't got an expansion tank you are OK, but if you have (like me) it's a bit of a pain! I really think for the extra bit of air you get it's not worth the hassle of relocating stuff and sourcing a LHD air box, but it could be a fun project if you fancy it.
Here's mine on K&Ns:

Garry, I can find some good contacts for you in Portugal, if that's a problem.
