Unleaded fuel and Alfa Nord

Hi,

What additive is everyone putting in when they fuel? Brand / Type and source would be very useful!

Re: Unleaded fuel and Alfa Nord

Hiya. I think there is another thread on this subject somewhere else as it is a popular topic. But here's my solution:

I think that the Nord engine is quite happy to run on unleaded without any additive. 95 RON though is said to give problems with pinking, so an additive is preferred here. 98RON (or higher) by itself is fine though. I use 98RON with Castrol Valvemaster Plus however, which might be a bit like five star...?! I haven't tried it with anything else apart from original four star which my local classic car garage sells (quite expensive though!)

Hope that helps. I'm sure others will have some other opinions, so that you can make a choice.

I use Millers VSP, added to 98 RON super unleaded. You don't need it for the lead but the Octane boost adds a bit more sparkle to the engine.

If I fill up with Shell V Power I usually miss out the VSP.

Re: Unleaded fuel and Alfa Nord

I am under the impression that until unleaded fuel became a norm in Alfa Nord engines, Alfa Romeo used cast iron valve seats..... So 98 Ron with an additive is required.. This is because the old super leaded fuel was 98 Ron!.

The only comment abourt valve saver additives is that I believe it is best to choose one chemical type and stick with it as there were reports that changing chemical type of valve saver increased valve seat wear.. I read the article many years ago so cannot 'find' it
