Distributor with adjustable advance curve

I've just noticed that a couple of the UK Alfa parts places are offering a drop in replacement distributor for 105 engines that has an adjustable (16 way selectable) advance curve. Sounds like a dream come true - new distributor, no more points, advance curve set for modern fuel. Has anyone tried one of these yet?

Re: Distributor with adjustable advance curve

There's a long thread on the AROC forum from a guy who's fitted a Classic Alfa one.

...and I'm having one fitted this week!

I did a search on AROC but couldn't find the reference - could you post a link to it?

Sorry, I was thinking of somewhere else - I don't have access to those forum pages. Can you summarise the details of why you are also taking the plunge.

Re: Distributor with adjustable advance curve

Same reasons you were thinking of: no points, so less to go wrong and they should be more reliable. They also provide a constant spark throughout the rev range and the Classic Alfa system is wrapped inside a normal distributor, so it looks original.

I had it fitted yesterday and it was a straight forward swap. The car seems to have lost some fluffiness that it had at low revs and it picks up better.

The selectable advance curves are for different engines and you choose the one (e.g. 2 litre) that matches your engine. You could play around and test others but, although the switch is on the outside, it's not very accessible and it's easiest to change setting with the distributor out.

Ian Ellis (www.ianellisalfas.co.uk) did the spannerwork for me.
