Fuel filter location on Spider with carbs

My Spider originally had the crossover type of air filter but it was replaced with the more common type on top of the plenum chamber. For running in winter there should be a duct from the side of the engine block for drawing warm air into the carbs. However, on my car, the fuel filter sits right underneath the air filter, preventing attachment of the warm air duct.

Can someone tell me where the fuel filter should be located? How far away from the pump can it be moved and at what height relative to the pump/carbs.

The filter/regulator on Mk1 GTVs can be seen in the attached pic. I would suspect that the filter location on a Spider would be the same.

That looks to be lower down than mine is. I can't quite see your pump but the filter looks to be on the same level as the pump - would this be correct? My filter is located about 16cm above the pump and prevents routing the warm air ducting down to the engine block.

Re: Fuel filter location on Spider with carbs

My '75 Spider has the filter in the same position as the pic above - on the inner wing, only very slightly higher than the pump - bit of a swine to change the element actually - did it last week!!

Re: Fuel filter location on Spider with carbs

In the next pic of a Mk1 GTV, the arrow points to the filter mounting bracket. This would seem to put the filter itself, as gpfleming said, only slightly above the fuelpump. I can measure the distance on another Mk1 this weekend if you'd like but it's certainly not 16cm. Can you post a pic of your filters' location?

Well it will take a while for me to get the engine out so I can get a clear shot at it

Instead I've indicated on your picture my location - the bracket is flush with the top of the "chassis rail" that runs through the engine bay. I'll have to fab a new bracket and move it down.

How often should the filter be changed? I put a new one in 1 yr/1000 miles ago.
