Which Oil for Spider Gearbox & Diff

Hello all,
I have not had my 1975 2000 Spider very long so have yet to get hold of an owners or workshop manual. However I am keen to check/change the gearbox and diff oil before we go for a run at the weekend.
Anyone know what type grade of oils I should be using and the approximate capacitys of the gearbox and diff?
Also I am taking a punt that the diff might be an early limited slip type as things seem to get grippy all of a sudden if you hang it out a little around a corner!

Re: Which Oil for Spider Gearbox & Diff

The yanks have lots of Spiders and other 105s, and for your year many likes Redline MTL for the gearbox, it's a 70W80 GL-4 and Redline 75W90NS (NS = No Slip) for the diff.
Originally Alfa recommended Shell Spirax GL-4, but the GL-4 is at special order only here in Denmark.
GL-4 seems to be important, modern GL-5 is said to have some additive(s) that doesn’t agree with our old boxes.

Re: Which Oil for Spider Gearbox & Diff

I use Castrol 85W/90 in my gearbox and diff. Originally I think the cars required SAE90 oil, which was purely 90 weight - I think - but as far as I'm aware you can't get that anymore.
My gearbox is reluctant for the initial 1st to 2nd gear shift, but then is very happy and easy to use. As far as the limited slip diff goes, I've only felt it kick in the once - but as you say, the 2000 spiders had LSD units.

Oh, and I sort of recommend the Brooklands Manual, and also if you look on ebay you may come across an original owner handbook which I find quite useful.

Hypoid SAE 90 gearoil is certainly still available. Most name brands do a version of it. If you want old style oils I recommend Penrite <http://www.classic-oils.net/penrite.htm> who have a lot of special types of oils for old cars and motorcycles.

If you're looking for manuals then you may want to get a Cardisc CD. It has parts manuals, service manuals, technical bulletins as well as owners handbooks. in PDF format.

Re: Which Oil for Spider Gearbox & Diff

Hi There
I have an Autobooks workshop manual for the 105 spider/ guillia covering models to 1978.
I recently had to release my baby as she wasn't getting used, and the wife converted the garage into a dining room .
It's been reasonably well used and has a few oily fingerprints but every page is readable and it is still in one piece.
If you are interested please make me an offer.
Cheers
Rog
