how much fuel
Hi,
please tell me how much fuel do you need for your Spider to run distance of 100 miles or what is a milage for one galon of fuel.
I drive Spider 2000 1975 with Dell'Orto carburetors; over 13 liters of fuel per 100 km in town and prox. 12 liters on a highway with speed of 80 mph.
I think that it is too much.

Re: how much fuel
Seems a bit high, I'd say 25 Miles per gallon, or 9.5 Litres per 100 KM, for both high speed cruising and normal urban use.
If driven gently, you might get better, drive it really hard and you will get worse, in fact worse than the figures you mentioned.
You might want to take yours to a trusted specialist to tune up the Carbs on a rolling road.

Re: how much fuel
For comparison, I just took my newly acquired '77 Spider 2000 with carbs on a cross-country run - it did 250 miles on a tankful, with just a little fuel to spare. Most of that travel was at 60mph or above. I thought that was pretty reasonable ! It was the first long journey in the car, so I had no idea how it would do, and I was pleased with the mileage it returned...not to mention the smiles.

Re: how much fuel
Well, although I've still not got my car back (one of the new brake pipes was leaking, and is yet to be fitted). I can just about remember getting around 30 mpg with twin Solex carbs with 98/99 octane + castrol valvemasterplus. But when putting one's foot down a bit, that goes down to about 23-5 I would think. I'm hoping that now the carbs have been finely tuned, that the ecomony might be better .

Re: how much fuel
Thanks guys.
I knew I should be unhappy.
It seems that it is something wrong with my carbs. I try to solve the problem on a dyno. Soon will be reported.
The engine in my car was with Spica fuwel injection system but I cut it away and changed to Dell'Orto carbs, not sure now it was right decision.

Re: how much fuel
I think we have the wrong types of car to worry too much about air pollution. I don't know what everyone else thinks? If I were that worried about it, I wouldn't have bought the Spider - and anyway, it's not used all day everyday, just at weekends or holiday weeks, so any air pollution is negligible in my humble opinion. My everyday car is a humble 1.4 petrol fiesta, so I really don't worry all that much.

Re: how much fuel
I think my 156 GTA has similar CO2 output to a jumbo jet, and I once burnt through a full tank of super unleaded with Octane booster, in the 1750 on a 100 mile Night road rally thats about 10MPG... apart from that I'm very green... I dont fly much and I share a lift to work
Oh and yes Ratcat you did the right thing, I wouldn't keep Spica, certainly not outside the US of A anyway. Very few people on this side of the pond know much about it.

Hi,
you said Ace Cafe ? I'm going to go there by my Thruxton next summer so no chance to test my Alfa on that way. I'm working on the carbs right now. No give up until success.

if they are giving you that bad an mpg. why not refurb them and get them set up on the car by a engine tuner.

Re: how much fuel
Yes, I used a similar kit to refurbish my Webers. They're great if there is no wear on the butterfly spindles - mine were OK. You get a chance to clean all the gunk out and replace the various internal O rings and gaskets. Worthwhile in my case as a couple of washers were misshapen and I needed new manifold gaskets. Good excuse to check the rubber mountings as well. I found Pat Braden's book on Webber carbs invaluable while I was doing it.

In normal daily running I get 28,5-31,3 MPG on my 1750 Spider, with account taken for mileage misreading (+4,5%)

I spent 3 hours in Alfa shop today. The engine sounds better, no vibs and works smoother. The carbs were completely renewed before.
Now I'm gonna fill a tank and you will get my report soon.
