S4 service tips please.

Gentlemen,

My recently purchased non cat Euro spec S4 is due a service. I would be most interested in your opinions regarding the best choices for the following service items. Plugs, tyres, oils, brake pads.

Further to this, do any owners have thoughts on the best filter/pipe combination for mild performance enhancement & everyday drivability. Would this necessitate re mapping the ignition?

Regards, Ed.

Re: S4 service tips please.

Hi Ed, this is a question with many opinions. Here is mine
Plugs: Lodge 2HL or NGK B7ES
Tyres: Depend on wheels, don't go too wide, suspension will suffer, Pirellis if all Italian is an issue.
Oils: Look in your manual, full synthetic only if your are absolutely sure that been in there all the time. If your S4 suffer from oil leaks or consumption, don’t go too thin – 15W-XX would be my choice. If manual specify GL5 transmission oil it's OK, if not stay with GL4 – hard to find, Shell Spirax GL4 was originally recommended and is good. Many likes Red Line who have a GL4 75/90. For diff LSD specific oil.
Brake pads: For road use original or specific for model/year after market (many prefer "Green Stuff"). For track days - ????
Filter/Pipe: On it own you get more induction noise/sound but no extra power, just sounds so. A remap of ECU normally gives a little (5-10%) and might give marginal extra with a less restrictive induction - Alfas don't usually have restrictive induction if you stick to original filters.

Re: Oil....the North engines aparently loves Castrol 10w-60 Racing. I use it for my 156 3.2 too and was surprised when i learned this is also the prefered oil by many for Classic Alfa's.
