Help Changed front discs recently?

Has anyone got an old front disc lying around? I'm looking for just the wheel studs which are a press fit. I need the longer type with a RH thread. Also any lead on a source of rear studs would be a huge help.

Re: Changed front discs recently?

Getting longer studs with exactly the right type of 'head' is quite tricky. I bought some Ford one's from Burton Power in the end.
They don't have the clipped circular head like the Alfa ones, but the splining on them seems to grip well enough in the holes.
In the end I only put one in as trial, then I changed plans and went back to the Alfa ones, so i currently have 7 spare Ford ones, and one stuck in the front hub!

Re: Changed front discs recently?

After a lot of searching I'm about to try the same thing. I have someone sending me a sample of Ford M12 x 1.5 studs 63mm length in the hope that they will fit once I've ground off part of the stud head. If they grip OK (and you say they do ) then I hope I'm all set.

Can you tell me the spec or part number that you used? Was it a 12mm or 13.1mm spline - those were the choices I was offered.

Can't remember TBH, I will have a look it might be tomorrow night though. I have a vague recolection that I had them turned down slightly too.

I'm not sure you need to grind the head, it's small enough to fit past without.

Thanks, that would be great. I have a nice set of Daytonas that I would like to get fitted, now that the sun has finally turned up for what is left of summer.

Re: Changed front discs recently?

OK been to check, im sure they were the 12mm Grayston ones.

https://www.burtonpower.com/Default.aspx

I did have the splines turned off though to bring the diameter down slightly. You might get them in with heat on the disc and some force on the stud, without turning them down, but you might not get them back out if it all goes wrong.

When you get them, check the OD of one of your existing studs with a Mike or Vernier Caliper, and then compare to the Ford ones. I think the Ford are about 12.5 over the splines, so this may need to come off.

If this all sounds to tricky, see if you can source some off a 75, I was led to believe they were longer than 105 type, but I never found any.

Re: Changed front discs recently?

Oh and something I forgot, you mentioned RH thread, are you swapping from LH thread on the NS?.
If so you will need to order some nuts, but you will find the cross flat dimensions of the Alfa nuts is considerably larger than the normal nuts available from Burtons and others. This leaves you with odd sized wheel nuts at one side, I am also a little dubious that the smaller nuts are big enough, for his reason I have mixed and matched, with two smaller and two larger on some wheels.

Either that or just buy a full set of larger Alfa nuts, but be careful that any blind headed nuts (often sold for Alloy's) don't foul on the end of the stud before they tighten on the rim. Obviously this depends on the stud length and wheel boss thickness.... all very complicated isn't it!!

Yes, it's tiresome having to always wait with your car, watching over the grease monkey and shouting LEFT HAND every other time he picks up the wheel wrench.

I have the standard (LH & RH thread) open nuts for steel wheels so will be getting regular dome headed nuts both because of the thread difference and for the looks. I assume they are just regular tapered nuts, without a captive washer or anything like that?

You mention forcing the stud into the hub and when I talked to someone about this they confirmed that the spline fits very tightly into a plain hole - I had thought that a normal hub would be have a splined hole as well. It shouldn't be a problem at the rear as I'll hopefully never have to revisit them but at the front I'll need to swap them into new discs when I need them. Complicated indeed.

Re: Changed front discs recently?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'normal' hub. The Alfa hubs aren't splined, they rely on the stud being a tight fit and the large diameter cap having a flat ground on to clear the inside of the disc and prevent rotation.
I think the dimension over the Splines on the studs I bought was too large to go in the hole even with a lot of force, hence why I turned them down.

The nuts are the taperred type, but don't forget to make sure the wheels you use have the correct hole profile.

The LH thread syndrome is a bit daft to say the least, mines even worse as i have a rear axle off a later model with RH threads on the NS, so only my front has LH threads

Anything not made by Alfa Romeo (in particular but probably Italians in general)
