S2 Spider bits...

Finally, after owning many modern Alfa's I've gone and got myself something a little more 'authentic'! - a 75' Spider 1600 Junior - imported from Italy in '83 it's in great order having done little more than the Sunday morning paper run each week for the last 5 years!!

I've had the chance to get a good look round her this morning and have a few questions.

1. Did the Juniors only come with rubber matting? or was there originally a carpet set too? - mine only has carpet on the tunnel area.

2. the dash has a radio sized hole cut in it - since speakers are fitted in the rear side panels (and they look like factory ones) I'm assuming the car also came with a radio/cassette? - does anyone know for sure? - the few pics I've seen of this dash only show the pininfarina badge blanking thing!

3. the hood appears to be original, and is in reasonable condition without rips or tears. However it has faded a little and looks grey in places. Is there some decent 'stuff' that can be applied that will condition the fabric - ie. restore it's waterproofing and darken it?

thanks fellas - more questions will no doubt be forthcoming shortly!!!

Re: S2 Spider bits...

Hi welcome to Spider ownership, can be a lot of fun even in this wonderful british weather!
1. I think most S2 Spiders came with rubber mats as standard. Plenty of carpet sets available from the usual suspects if you want some.
2. Not sure if they came with a radio as standard, but old style radio/casettes are usually fitted. Modern DIN size seem a bit larger and may require some work to fit. I have an old Sharp R/C in mine but its only to fill the hole, no speakers. I prefer to listen to the engine.
3. There are several products available to restore the hood. Renovo gets good reviews, and Autoglym also do a hood cleaner/restorer that I've heard good reports on. Not used any myself though my hood could do with it.

Re: S2 Spider bits...

Thanks Si - I'm not actually too bothered about sounds either - just want to fill the hole in the dash!!

anyway - quick Q?

4. I've only seen a few pics of LHD 1600 Juniors, but they've had different door mirrors - half have the round ones and half have oval - mine has oval - was there a changeover date? - was it random?

Re: S2 Spider bits...

Hi GP - and welcome to Spider ownership
1. Rubber was standard, and regarded as originallity. Carbets came on 1980 models, probably on 1600 juniors, too.
2. I don't either think Spider came with radios ab factory. I have a period radio too, even with speakers, doesn't work though, engine sound better.
3. Ditto to Shambeko.

Re: S2 Spider bits...

GP, Congrats with the purchase... Erik and Si have covered most of your questions, I only have one more "tip" about the roof, Mothers also make a roof "shampoo" and protector, it worked wonders on my roof.... a bit expensive though.

Mine is a '76 2000, also came with the rubber carpets, factory speakers (no radio though), and one oval mirror.

Re: S2 Spider bits...

cheers guys - never heard of this "Mothers" stuff! - is it available in the UK?

i Bought an Autoglym dual pack at the weekend - bottle of roof cleaner/restorer and one of protector - comes with a hard sponge thingy - hasn't helped with the colour - it's certainly clean now - and probably much more waterproof - but it's still grey!!

there's a lot of SFS (!) stuff on the bay that gets the usual good feedback- but i've never heard of it .....

I guess Renovo's gotta be worth a go..

PS - the rear script badge is awaiting refitting - someone put it on in the wrong place and I just couldn't bear it!!!
