Hmmm Steering Wheel Refurb

Hi Guys,
Help, I've finally got hold of a Spider steering wheel which is thicker and slightly smaller than my O.E. Berlina one. Its in a "pre-enjoyed" kind of state so i thought I'd have a go at restoring it.
Has anyone on here done this before?
If so how is the best way of removing all the old laquer/varnish in order to refinnish it?

Thumbs Up Re: Steering Wheel Refurb

Just an update for anyone that may have seen this unreplied to post. Atfer many hours of gentle sanding to retain the profile of the wood but remove the old lacquer..... success, its like new, I just need to get a set of new surrounds for the horn pushes then fit it.

Re: Steering Wheel Refurb

Missed your original post, did this several times back in the 1970's, including the steering wheel off one of the worst cars ever, an Aston DBS. The steering wheel wood was broken, so I set it together with hard setting resin bound up with wire, then sanded it and just polished the wood.

Er, lost count a bit, 8 or 10 I think. 2 at a time with a light rubdown with 2000 wet n dry in-between.

Beautiful work...!

Just wanted to ask what kind of lacquer you used...?

Was it brushed or sprayed onto the wood...?

Many Thanks

2K clearcoat, as spayed onto most modern metallic car paint jobs.
I work in a car bodyshop so just asked one of the painters to spray a few coats on each time I got it ready for some more.:xmas:
