65 giulia spider ignition problems?

Hi All,

I just purchased a 65 giulia spider and
am going through the workings to get her running.
I'm new here so let me just say that it is so great
to have all this info on hand in such a great place.
So thanks in advance. I'm sure to have alot of
questions but i'll start with the immediate problem.

Here's what i've done so far. Removed the plugs,
poured a capful of MMO in each cylinder,
installed new ignition as old key was bogus.
Turned the engine! Nothing...
In first key position all the lights work.
After investigating i found a wire off of the starter.
Plugged it up turned the key and the engine cranked.
Only problem is that it turns over in the first key position.
This doesn't seem right as the starter is running continuously.
I'm thinking that the soleniod might be stuck?
Any advice as to solving this would be great
so i can move on to the spark and fuel stage.

Also one side note.. after emailing the Automobilismo Storico Alfa Romeo
they informed me that the engine # AR00548*46458* belongs to a 1750.

Good? Bad? I don't know. More power.. Not original, less value?

Any thoughts?

regards,
geoff

Re: 65 giulia spider ignition problems?

Hi Geoff
Welcome to AO. Lovely looking car you've got there!
It sounds like you've got some wires crossed somewhere when you put the new ignition barrel in. I would concentrate on that bit before you start dismantling anything else.
As for the engine, you'ev hit the nail on the head. It's a bit newer and more powerful, but it does affect originality and value. It depends how much of an issue that is to you and how much you paid. To be honest providing you didn't pay a huge premium for a matching numbers car, I would just enjoy it!!

Cheers
Rick

Re: 65 giulia spider ignition problems?

Thanks Rick. I hooked the new barrell up the same as the old. This could certainly/hopefully could be my first alfa lesson. Just cause its hooked up doesn't mean that its right, right. Can I trial and error these wires or will i short the switch? I suspect now that since the key wasn't working the PO might have tried to hot wire it and put the wires back incorrectly. I'll start there and then work my way through cleaning the rusty connections. Thanks again.

Re: 65 giulia spider ignition problems?

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to AO!

According to the wiring diagram, the ignition switch should have three wires; red on terminal 30 (unswitched hot), brown on terminal 15 (switched hot), and a black wire to the starter on terminal 50. If you send me your email address, I'll send you a color wiring diagram.

Voila! The wires were crossed. First turn powers up, second fires the starter, Perfect! Thanks rick and jim.

Re: 65 giulia spider ignition problems?

Well i moved on to the good stuff, gas and fire. And my Alfa is now officially running. Yeaaaa! Now for the next task. The belt was squeelin and smokin so i suspected that something was locked up and sure enough it's the water pump. Any suggestions on unfreezing it or where to get a new one? Also what does this mean for the state of the engine? I'm gonna start a new thread. thanks for the help.
