Steering Column Lock on 1975 GT Jnr 1.6

Does anyone have knowledge of the best way to remove the steering column lock, given that the steering lock in engaged and the key is lost?

My car is a 1975 GT Junior 1.6. The car was put into storage during a house move and the ignition key got lost. The car is now stuck in my new garage with the wheels at 20°.

This is how far I've got.

The bolts securing the steering lock & ignition switch to the column appear to be accessed from above. i.e. the column needs to be removed to get to them.

I've removed the bolts connecting the steering column to the body. The outer housing of the column can now slide a little but the column is still quite rigid.

I've not removed the steering wheel or switchgear yet because I didn't want to disturb any electrics !! but this is looking like my next job.

It also looks like I've got to separate the column from the steering box, which looks a tricky job to access the fixings.

In summary I think I need to fully remove the steering column from the vehcile to get to the iginition switch and steering lock.

If anyone knows of an easy way to unlock the steering I love to hear it.

Re: Steering Column Lock on 1975 GT Jnr 1.6

Assuming that the Junior is the same as a 1750/2l, there is but a single bolt that retains the ignition switch. This bolt is on the top of the switch and is accessed by removing the upper and lower plastic steering column covers. The head of the bolt will appear as a round button quite similar to a carriage bolt. This is a security bolt that when installed, the hex head portion of the bolt is designed to break off leaving just the button. So it doesn't look like a bolt at all when installed.
One method of removal is to use a sharp, pointed punch. Place the punch off bolt center and tap anti-clockwise. If that doesn't work, a small Dremel type tool can be used to cut a slot into the button where a flatblade screwdriver can now remove the bolt.
If you new switch does not come with a new security bolt, a regular 6x1.0 hex head bolt will work. I think the length is about 15mm.

A few words of caution. If the steering column is removed from the box, the box will need to be removed for reassembly. So don't remove it! When installing the steering column support, ensure that the spacers go back in their original locations. If they don't, the steering column alignment will be off which will stress the steering box leading the box cracking. If you'd like the Alfa issued steering column alignment procedure, please PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Do you have a door key? usually ignition keys fitted the doors, if you change the ignition lock can you lock the doors? Most ignition lock barrels are retained by a pin, but some need the original key to remove the barrel. If the barrel is removable it is possible to make a good key from a suitable blank, if somewhat tedious. I used to do locks years ago. Papajams answer sounds good, gently tap out the bolt with a pointed punch.

Thanks Papajam. I finally got round to the job today. Access to the screw was difficult, even with the cowl removed. I certainly couldn't get a dremmel to it but luckily it move with a gently tap with a chisel.

I can now finally move the car out of the garage.
