1971 alfa gtv

hey, i have a 1971 alfa 1750 gtv, and was wondering if anyone knows how to adjust the steering because it was a bit loose...if anyone has any information on how to adjust or any walkthroughs or anything that would awsome.

i think i might have a small leak in the head gasket aswell...if anyone knows a good place to purchase parts or sumthing that would be great.

im trying to work on it in my auto shop and would like maybe some information or walkthroughs on them or anything like that.

Re: 1971 alfa gtv

By loose do you mean excess play in the steering wheel ?? If so could be the steer box is worn, I think it can be shimmed to tighten it up but you may need to get a refurb'd one.
If its a bit of 'vagueness' it the steering then check all the trackrod balljoints and the steering idler - my '71 GTV had a shot trackrod balljoint and resulted in a little vagueness at speed and pulled under braking..

Get your hands on the Brooklands workshop manual, also the "All Alloy Twin Cam companion" is a good read.

As for spares Google for "Classic alfa" the first two hits carry most spares you'll need. I've ordered from both and never had and problems

Re: 1971 alfa gtv

Hi Tsizzle, what part of the world are you from?, the UK has 4 main suppliers, in no particular order;

Highwood Alfa in Swansea
Alfaholics Devon
EB spares Wiltshire
Classic Alfa London.

They all do mail order and all have good websites, EB don't quote prices on line, but they seem to charge roughly the same as the others. Fluffies response regards steering seems spot on to me, I don't think the steering box is a home mechanics job though. I recently had a suspension upgrade and the Garage I used (Alwyn Kershaw in York) also took some play out of the arm which connects the box to the trackrods. It's a bit vague I know, but his description to me was vague as well.
I should get your headgasket sorted ASAP, you don't want to damage anything. Ask 'Ricksalfas' about headgaskets!

Welcome to AO, any pics of the Car to show us?.
