1964 Sprint GT

Gentlemen,

Since there is so much knowledge here I thought I should send a question and see if I got an answer to my question.

I know of a 1964 Sprint GT for sale, is it basically the same as a...lets say 1300GT Junior or is it a "special" car?

The car is a "project" car and in need of bare metal restoration, it is said that it is 99% complete, but I have no idea of the state of all the parts.

Hope you guys can give me some thoughts and ideas.

Thanks

Re: 1964 Sprint GT

This would be one of the orginal Bertone bodied 105 Giulias. Similar to the GT Junior (if this is a step front one) but sporting a 1600 engine (if still original). The car will have the step front and a chrome grill, and a "flat dash board" this style was the same for the 1st GTV (slightly more powerful 1600 engine and the horizontal bars on the grill) the GTa (very special car worth £40,000 plus) and the earlier 1300 GT Juniors. The 1750 GTV was the 1st of the flat front cars with 4 headlights and 2 Big dials on the dash, a style which migrated to the 1300 GT junior in 1971 (sans the extra headlights). The 1600 GT Junior Followed in 1972. The juniors and got the same style and dash as the 1972 2000GTV ie chrome grill and big tail lights a couple of years later.

This 1964 car has brakes that are by dunlop and parts are harder to come by. But the car can be upgraded with engines and brakes etc from later cars if required, and as it is a step front makes a more authentic looking GTa rep.

As such is is worth no more or less than most and is all subject to condition. Though because it is one of the oldest and looks like a GTa is become rarer than later cars.

Re: 1964 Sprint GT

Thanks Nick,

it is a step front car, the rest I'm not sure about since I've only seen 1 pic of it and it is already stripped down from all exterior and interior parts.

How can one tell if a car is a GT or a GTa car? (apart from VIN - I guess)
I understand the GTa is rare and I have no hope that this car is a GTa.

Re: 1964 Sprint GT

If it was a GTa it would be a real find, but to be honest it's VERY unlikely, those cars were really coveted and it just wouldn't happen to find one by accident.
Just to be sure though, a GTA has most of the external panels in Aluminium, even the roof.
Apart from the corrosion differances, you can tell if it's a GTA by the line of pop rivets just behind the rain gutter up the A piller and across the roof. The Engine has two plugs per cylinder, which is a bit of a giveaway.

If you can find the Chassis number (on the Bulkhead in the engine bay) and Engine number on the Crank Case somwhere, you can find the exact details of the Car from Elvira Ruocco at Alfa's central records on;

ArchivioStorico@alfaromeo.com

Good luck and send us some pictures.

the emailadress is still correct, but you won't get an answer from Elvira herself, because she has retired.

Thumbs Up Re: 1964 Sprint GT

Hi 1300GT - All Gulia Coupes (Bertone) are desirable and celebrated cars. Both the Sprint GT, the original version lanced, at the ultra rare GTa’s are among the most valuable. You’ll learn a great deal from www.carsfromitaly.com, but there are lots of books on the model.
According carfromitaly.com the vehicle ID for the two models are

Model No. Details Engine No.
105.02 Giulia Sprint GT, 1570cc, from 1963 AR00502
105.32 Giulia Sprint GTA, 1570cc, from 1965 AR00502/A or AR00532/A

Model No. on bulkhead along the chassis No. and the engine No. on lower LH side on the back of the block (written vertically just forward of the bell house)
Good luck finding the pro and con on this Sprint GT.

Alfisti regards
Erik

Re: 1964 Sprint GT

Hi all,

I have not been able to get hold on the seller since my last post... but a couple of more questions to all you initiated Alfista's ... I basically suck when it comes to dealing with the bodywork, if a car has some rust, APART FROM THE SPARE PARTS/PANNELS, how much would you guys estimate it would cost to get a professional to sort out the bodywork?
I know this is a question which is "impossible" to answer since you have not seen the car (I have not apart from 1 pic), but would it be something like 2000 pound in labour or 6000?

This specific car is supposed to still have the engine (do not know in which state), but if a new engine is needed, how much would a rebuilt engine cost?
