Hmmm New Carbs and exhaust for my GT Junior

What's the best place to buy new carbs (twin webber's) for my GT 1300 Junior - my mechanic says I need them. Also I want to put a complete new exhaust on it - I prefer stainless steel but would like to use the opportunity to improve performance if that's possible but not losing that lovely Alfa rasping exhaust note - any suggestions

Don't know where you can get them in Ireland, but be aware the carbs for the 1300 are different then the carbs for the 1600 / 1750 / 2000. Has something to do with the angle of the valve to regulate the airflow for idle speed.

Re: New Carbs and exhaust for my GT Junior

Gt 1.3 Junior could also use Dellorto DHLA 40 carbs . These appear to be the same as used on late 1960 to early 1970's Pre anti polution Alfa Romeos includng 1750s etc except for the guts--ie emulsion tubes, jetting, difusser, choke size etc.
Dellorto apparently give better fuel economy and more power than Weber carbs.
I have all details of jetting if of interest.
Dellorto UK
http://www.dellorto.co.uk/

NB The book Car Service Data by J,. N. Searle (3 rd edition 1978) lists the following carbs used on the Alfa Romeo 1300 GT Junior (1967-1972)

Weber 40 DCOE 28
Dellorto 40 DHLA
Solex C40DDH4
Presumably what you got on your new Alfa Romeo at the time,
was what was sitting in the box be side the engine builder
And the really unlucky new owners got the Solex Carbs

That is indeed how it worked back then. Even within one modelyear you find different brands of carbs fitted. I have twin Dell'ortos:

My 2000 spider had solexs originally. When they needed rebuilding it was difficult to get parts, so changed to Dellortos.
I believe new webers are had to come by as they have stopped production.

I believe that even Dellorto have stopped production of Carbies these days .

The Mob that handles Dellorto in the UK also aparently handle Weber as well. When I was in their shop several years ago they had loads and loads of Dellorto spares etc.

You were lucky
Apparently Alfa used to mix and match cams as well. ie the Cams for the the most of US and California and Australia C 1980 were different from Europe, but cars could get Euro cams if others were not available etc.

Re: New Carbs and exhaust for my GT Junior

Dumb question but what's wrong with the original carbs that requires their replacement?

There's a good discussion in this AlfaBB thread on the use of a mufflerless tail section called a 'stinger'. Keep in mind that if a free-flow exhaust is installed, the carbs will more than likely need re-jetting.

Webcon are the main UK agents for Weber carbs, they should have all necessary bits to overhaul your carbs.
DCOE 40's are no longer produced so Webcon have made a copy.
If you manage to get a pair of new Weber's i think you won't get much change out of £1K.
Have you considered fuel injection?

Re: New Carbs and exhaust for my GT Junior

Thanks for the advice guys - I was onto Richard banks of Alfaholics and he explained that all my carbs need is reconditioning and recommended me to a Bob Dove in London who does a full job on them for £100 - so I think I will go for that -

It was (to my surprise) possible to source my exhaust through my local fast fit outlet - complete system including fitting kit will cost about 250 euro's and will take three weeks to get.

Is the fast fit guy correct in stating that the exhaust is the same for all 105 series models from the GT 1300 to the GTV 2000

Alfaguy

Any contact details for Bob Dove? And let us know whether he does a good job.
