Thumbs Up Help in getting history of ex-UK 1750 Spider

Hi all,

I have today purchased a 1969 1750 roundtail Spider. Picture attached.

http://i560.photobucket.com/albums/s.../151413012.jpg

Needless to say I am ecstatic. Unfortunately, I do not have the car with me yet. It has been in storage for some time and it is being looked over for me.

I am trying to find out some more history on the car. According to Alfa's records, the car was originally sky blue and was supplied to the UK in the first half of 1969. I have been able to find out that the car was painted its present avorio (ivory) colour in about 1989/90 from a hand written note in the file given to me with the car today.

The file shows that the car had registration number AAF 750 J in the UK and was owned in the early 1980s by a Mr. Barbagallo. Later it was owned by Giancarlo Cossu and then by Gareth and Lesley Robinson. The latter two owners entered the car in AROC's concours competitions for a number of years.

I would be interested in hearing from any previous owners and anyone who could shed some light on the first 10 years of the car's life in the UK.

Thanks and best regards from a very excited new old Alfa owner.

Charles

funny enough the DVLA over here still lists that registration, as last being licensed till end January 2001.
It also gives date of first registration as 21.08.1970 and calls it a 1970 model (back then they didn't care when a car was manufactured, just when it was first registered on the road)

Apart from production date it's not incorrect to name it 1970 model. RHD S2 production didn't start until 1971.
From the pic all I can say is fantastic looking condition and the colour suites it very well .
Congrats
Erik

Very smart. Congratulations on a beautiful roadster.
I do like the idea of sky blue, it seems to be coming back on many modern cars too.

Thanks too. I also like the idea of the sky blue. I used to love the Berlina and GTV in that colour. However, the paint on mine is so good, I'm not touching it! I kind of like the idea that it is not red too.

I agree, not red is no bad thing. I'm a bit intrigued by the original colour of sky blue though. There was a pretty limited range of colours back then in the UK and the only blue on a spider IIRC was a dark blue - Dutch blue. I don't think I've ever seen a light blue factory colour. If you have a paint code that'd be interesting. I take it that the original was non metallic?

Hi Harry,

Thanks for your continued interest. I bumped the thread in the hope of finding someone on here who would be able to direct me somewhere where I could find out more about the history of the car, eg. a member of the UK Alfa owners' club.

Regarding the colour, I think the code is AR 301- I don't have the email I received from Alfa's archives at the moment. It is a non-metallic, very pale blue and is definitely one of the original colours in which the car was available.

Here is an example I downloaded from the web.

Regards,
Charles
