Lights won't turn off! (Alfetta GT)

Hi there guys! I have a problem with my Alfetta GT (or GTV)... I was going to take her for a drive and it wouldnt start! I call the service and we managed to start it. An then I realized what caused the battery drain, the lights where on! Even though the leaver was in the off position... what could be causing this problem??? Relays?

any help is welcome!

Which lights were on, Sides, Dipped, Mains ?

On the GTV's here in the UK there are no Relays for the lights as far as I know but could be wrong. In fact I did a mod on mine to fit Relays for the Headlights to stop the Stalk Switch from frying itself !

My first thought on your problem would in fact be the Stalk Switch, these aren't very robust, I've had problems with more than one of these but they have all failed in such a way that things didn't work, not that they left something permanently on.

If I remember correctly all the wires from the Stalk Switches terminate on one Plug near the bottom of the Steering Column so just unplug this and see if the fault disappears. If it does then you probably have a fault on the Switches. If the fault is still there then you have a short circuit somewhere which will need a process of tracing and eliminating or a mysterious hidden Relay stuck on..

IF the fault appears to be on the Switches then initially I'd try cleaning and lubricating them.

If the tests are inconclusive then I'm not sure, if something occurs to me I'll get back to you.

Thanks. I'll try with the stalk switch first... The lights that keep on are de front lights. But there's something weird, the ones that keep on are the highs, and theres only one low on!!! And if I turn the lows on with the stalk switch the one that was off turns on!

switch off: OX V OO
switch on: OO V OO

weird!!!!

Sounds like you might have a poor Earth as well as something else. I think I'd start with disconnecting the Stalk Switches to see what happens then.

Happy Fault Hunting !
