Hello All,
First of all thanks to all who contributed to solving my idle speed problem, it did indeed appear to be more than a little junk in the idle valve mechanism.

I am still getting a problem with the engine attempting to die/stall & shooting a bit of black smoke from the exhaust- particularly when hot, so I thought having consulted the manual that I would try the Motronic diagnostic system - manual says push the button - I don't have one ! I have a white 4 pin connector block with terminals having the 2 blue & white wires and two black wires that the wiring diagram says belong to the disappeared button but it also carries another two wires.

I would appreciate any comments on whether this white connector block is "standard" and whether temporarily bridging the blue & white wires with the black ones will have the same effect as pushing the button (if I had one !) Is the button a simple device or something complicated?

Glad the idling problem was cleared up!
If you want to clean up somethoing else, go to the fuel vapour catch, the black cannister thing near the coil - mine was quite dirty, so removed it and cleaned out well with some brake cleaning fluid (takes 15 minutes all in and you feel good after) Mine was Ok, but i have seen these completely clogged up with thick junk

Back to your problem: The S4's don't have this diagnostic button. L jetronics do.

Are you sure your lamda sonde is good? (the thing screwed in to the exaust pipe, just before your Kat)

What white block are you talking about. Here is a shot of my Motronic brain box, euro S4 so i presume identical to yours.....or is it out of shot? I seem to recall a white block under the back shelf which is connected to nothing, so I presume it is for a car perhaps with aircon, or auto transmission or airbag (built in for US market cars, and unused for us europeans!) or something like that.

Hi Spiderserie4 ,
This Series 4 doesnt have a cat.converter so no Lambda sonde.
The Motronic unit has two terminal blocks "free" a 4 pin white one and a three pin black one (fitted with a hinged snap on cap) I have attached a photo that shows the white connector
the black three pin one doesnt show up very well but is just behind the white connector.
