Number plates

I'm sure we're all law abiding citizens here - but, what number plates do you manage to get away with and where did you get them from?

I had a chat to these guys yesterday and people asking for an 'Italian' looking number plate for Alfa Romeos are pretty common apparently! Who'd have thought!

The rear plate seems fairly straightforward - but for the front of the '64 Sprint GT (and I'm thinking of running without the bumpers) I fancy something small and Italian

Any ideas and pix would be appreciated!

Re: Number plates

You lot in the UK are lucky, over here in Portugal their is only one legal size.Look how bad this looks!(camera-phone).The front looks worse,it nearly covers half of the nose.
Sorry, don't mean to highjack your thread.

Re: Number plates

Strictly speaking it's the same here - but, well, on an old car - it's always been like that officer

Is this the UK, for once taking the law a bit less seriously than other European countries?

My Caterham has passed its annual MoT inspection with a stick on plate on the nose cone that's not at all legal!

Re: Number plates

I always wondered about forcing legality issues on front plates, after all m/bikes dont have them and surely the law applies to all vehicles

Re: Number plates

Quite a few Caterhams drive round with no plates on the front, and one in the boot so that if stopped, "it just fell off"

Re: Number plates

I can't believe that all our UK based Classic Alfas are running round with compliant plates?

Re: Number plates

According to the DVLA site and i quote

Are stick-on number plates legal?
No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.

Re: Number plates

My Spiders had a stick on black front plate for about 10 years. Never had any problem with police/MOT testers.

Re: Number plates

Yeah I know loads of cars with stick on front plates, was just trying to show what was on the dvla site and therefore the inconsistency of it all

Re: Number plates

Rick - from your little pic, that looks the kind of 'look' we are after - any chance of a close up? Is that a solid (pressed aluminium?) plate, and if so how is it fastened on?

Cheers

Wave Re: Number plates

Hi Geoff
Yes, it's a pressed ali plate. It's the perfect size for the plinth on my front bumper (when fitted):

When the bumper's not on it's self tapped through the front valance.

Not sure where it came from as it was on the car but I'm sure someone like Ian Ellis would be able to tell you.

Re: Number plates

I've bought a small front plate from a stall at a car show ('For show purposes only'!). It uses the same digit size as a motorcycle and I will be fitting it to the front nearside shortly. I'm doing this partly for looks and partly to give more airflow to cool the engine........ Officer!

Look on Ebay. There are hundreds of sellers.

Re: Number plates

I bought a small front number plate to fit in the 'italian' sized area on the front bumper. I got it from Framptons number plates, they gave a very good service.
I've since replaced it with a normal sized one as a few scrutineers moaned about it. I was never questioned by MOT people or the police though.

Re: Number plates

I have Italian size plates on the front of the Montreal and a friend of mine has adhesive style on the bonnet of his Montreal. They look so much better, the normal plates seem huge on Italian cars styled with small plates in mind. Legally they may be a bit iffy, and I don't want to tempt fate but... I've never been stopped. I do however, carry the old number plate in the boot, just in case. Then I can use some sort of "just been to a car show - forgot to swap them" style excuse.
Got mine from Framptons also - they know the dimensions but I have them written down somewhere if you want them.
