Damn Starter-motor!
Anybody that has pulled a starter-motor out of a S2 Spider will know what I went through today.
The motor would not turn,so I decided to have a closer look. One hour later it was out!Inspected the brushes and it looked fine, tapped the motor a couple of times and replaced it.After 45 minutes it was ready to be tested. The motor turned perfect so I was smiling After the third time it stopped turning
Any ideas?
Tomorrow I take the motor out again
Regards

Re: Damn Starter-motor!
Since nobody is answering my post I think I will have a go;"Hi Garry,I think you might have to replace the solenoid"
Any other response?

Re: Damn Starter-motor!
Well....
could be the solenoid does that help
Or a dodgy connection somewhere.... (dis)connectors are a real pain if they're intermittent
Sorry .........best I can do
But good luck with it tomorrow

Re: Damn Starter-motor!
How are the cables running to starter ? I recently replaced my S2 heavy current cables running from battery to starter, to ignition switch, and main battery earth - they were in a helluva state, particularly the positive cable, which runs along the crossmember under engine to starter - it had insulation missing everywhere, and had been shorting against frame for years. Made a huge difference in the car's willingness to crank.
Don't these starters earth between starter mounting flange and engine ? No paint, etc between these two surfaces ?
If it has to come out again, my suggestion would be to run it down to a shop that specializes in wound motors, alternators etc - they can bench test and advise if windings are suspect, or commutator, etc. Should only cost a few beans, but would at least stop you struggling to refit a bad component again.
Just a few thoughts...

when in trouble, when in doubt...run in circles, wave and shout !

Re: Damn Starter-motor!
You could just replace the starter motor. How many times have we all thought after spending ages fault finding that actually it would have been more cost effective all round just to replace the blooming part in the first place!
Early S2 spiders (and I don't know if yours falls in this bracket) were fitted with a rather puny starter motor anyway (A bit slow on turnover). It was upgraded part way through the production run. So if it was one of these then a later / modern spec starter motor is a decent upgrade.

I have been thinking about replacing it with a reduction-gear starter motor, can't afford it right now Recently I forked out 3000 Euros for body repairs!

Re: Damn Starter-motor!
You don't say whether the starter is trying to turn or not, but a short way to check on your cable quality is to put a good quality jump lead directly onto the starter connection from the battery. If it works ok, then either the solenoid or the cables are faulty, and you can carry on from there by further process of elimination. If the starter won't turn with a direct feed, then you know that there is a fault with it.
My brother had starter problems with a Fiat Uno a few years ago. All was ok when cold, but starter either slowed or wouldn't work when hot. It turned out to be the bearings - too hot and a little expansion in the metal just caused the thing to go tight........
