1987 2.0 spider

noise from the back end!!

H I folks,
I have a low pitched whining/droning noise from the back end of my 1987 S3 spider. I don't know if it could be diff or maybe wheeel bearings? Any ideas???

Change the bearings first it's the cheapest option. If it's still there then it must be the diff.
Mine was doing the same, it didn't change pitch when I was cornering so I wrongly assumed it was the diff, it turned out to be a wheel bearing. Costly error, though I did take the opportunity to tighten up the LSD so I was happy in the end.

Wheel bearings normally wine and get louder when you speed up but still wine when going faster or slowing down with a simular note.

Diffs wine louder with speed but normally change note when you lift off the gas (on over run) and change note again when you put your foot back on the gas.
