Re: Restoring 1969 Gt 1750
It's looking good
Are you leaving the extra vents in the front panel?. 1750's only have the upper two, the lower ones came in afterwards, presumably to let more air in for the 2000GTVs.
It wouldn't bother me at all, but if you are really looking for authenticity you might want to fill them in too.

Hello if you study the photgraphs you will see that my original panel on this series 1 had four vents also.....so Im not sure what the confusion comes from?

Re: Restoring 1969 Gt 1750
that's puzzelling
Maybe it's been replaced at some point in it's past. Both mine and Ricks have two vents, though mines been modified extensively (badly!).

Re: Restoring 1969 Gt 1750
Guys...I am wanting to recondition the rear tail light assemblies...I aquired original Carello series 1 NOS lenses from some time ago in the USA but need to prepare the tail light housing.
These seem to be made of cast aluminium and I have removed the reflector shields for re-chroming, but it appears that the 3 slots that fit bulb housing have been damaged (see photos)...
Does anyone know if there a way to repair this?
Also is there a process that I can treat these once repaired so they dont suffer the white layer of surface corrosion?

Simply awesome mate...really nice job. Good on ya.
How did you get the valve cover so nice. I spent hours with buffing wheels, a Dremmel drill with minatutre buffing wheels etc. I was reasonably pleased with my effort..now I just feel scruffy!!!
Did you get it electropolished? If so, where. Rosco Perth, WA

I used a buffing wheel attachment on my bench grinder with some aluminium polish. then did all the details aroound the alfa romeo script with a tooth brush and the rest by hand...this took me 2 days to do 2 of them!!

No it never has been replaced..though it is a series 1 1750. I have it on good authority that during the 1750 production run, Alfa changed the design from 2 to 4 vents and just started assembling the cars with them when they (the 4 vents valance) became available.

I wonder if Australian markets cars have always had 4 vents for extra cooling? I've certainly never seen a UK 1750 with 4, even on the Mark 2.
As for the light fittings you could try Mazak Mender or maybe cut some bulb holders off some other light backs? Original 1750 backs do come up occassionally on Ebay Europe but they cost a bomb if you can find them!!

If that is the case Rosco, can I suggest you take it to a professional metal polisher in your local area...they have the heavy duty machines to cut away that first layer of aluminium and reveal the smooth shiney surface which you can coat an maintain by hand!

Re: Restoring 1969 Gt 1750
I have just taken delivery of my engine bottom end and components from the local engineer. I have had the following done:
1. Resize conrods and aligned.
2. Replaced all bush pins fit and aligned.
3. Linish the crank per pin
4. Balance complete engine assembly
5. Dummy assemble and measure main bearing clearances.
6. Measure conrod bearing clearances
7. Machined piston valve reliefs
8. Cleaned out all water jackets and cleaned the interior of the block.
Before I begin assembly...I am planning on cleaning the outside of the cast engine block and then thinking about spraying it with "VHT Engine Enamel" - Universal Aluminium colour...
Does anyone have any suggestions of the best products to clean the outer surface of the engine block and suggestions about spraying it??

Re: Restoring 1969 Gt 1750
I used whatever the local motor factors were selling! One was from 3in1 and one was Comma I think. Gunk is also good but your hands smell for the next week!!

If you get it bead blasted you have to make sure you get every last residue of bead out of it... be careful!

Re: Restoring 1969 Gt 1750
i am planning on re-assembly of my rear tail lights and noticed that the bayonet bulb housings have different positions as per my photos....one is higher than the other; can anyone advise where the higher and lower positions should be assembled into the housing...??
