Wiper Problems

Perhaps someone can help with a blow by blow of how to repair the wipers on my 86 Spider. I think the motor is OK but the mechanic are either broken or dis-connected. Thanks guys

Re: Wiper Problems

Tankman, I can hear the motor working, however the blades don't move.

Re: Wiper Problems

What sort of setup is it? Bowden cable, with an external spiral, that engages with the gears in the wheel boxes? Or were Alfa using a linkage mechanism back then?

Re: Wiper Problems

ZF - it should be a linkage mechanism.

It'sa good sign if you can hear the motor working. It sounds as though a pin in the linkage might have dropped out? If you remove the wiper arms and then the panel in front of the windscreen which has the splined wiper spindles poking through you can then see the wiper motor and all the linkage. You should see some small screws on the front edge of this panel if you open the bonnet (hood). The back edge locates on seven(?) clips which are held in place by the windscreen rubber. Most of these clips were rusted away on my Spider so the windscreen had to come out just to replace them.

Re: Wiper Problems

When you gain access to the link arms and motor you should first check that the shafts that come through for the wipers are not seized or tight.
If they are this can cause the ball joints at the end of the arms to pop of or in some cases the short arm on the motor to strip its tapered spine.
You should be able to see the problem very easily.
If you find the shafts are the problem, I can describe removal and rectification if its of help.
