1600 GT Junior

Does anyone else in South Africa have a 1600 GT Junior with single head lights and the bigger tail lights? I get so many different answers.

Re: 1600 GT Junior

Strange Question, as far as I am aware the 1600GT Junior only had small back lights (same units as Lotus car) the 2000GTV had large back lights. The GT junior did come with single or twin headlights depending how old it was.

Re: 1600 GT Junior

Intresting, it looks like large back lights as on a 2000GTV but they are not Alfa lights as I know them.
They would normally be red along the bottom and yellow along the top with reversing white areas on the top as well. I know the 1600 was the same as Lotus cars, so perhaps these are larger lotus units adapted?? or are specific units to S Africa.

This is the standard 2000 rear lens:

And this is the usual 1600:

It looks like someone has fitted some alternatives to your car!

Idea Re: 1600 GT Junior

Just a thought. Has someone used Kamm tail Spider rear lights on it?

Re: 1600 GT Junior

These back lights your car is using come from 1750 BERLINA and the same pair has been used in JUNIOR ZAGATO.There were SA cars with big lights, the same as on the 2000 gt veloce due to some special law that has been implemented saying about incorporating the reverse light at the same cluster. The same law has been found in US early 70s for 1750 gt veloce, using the same lights with the 2000 gt but before the last mentioned being produced.I am not sure for the exact date that these lights have been introduced in SA cars though.

Re: 1600 GT Junior

If your car still has the small reversing light under the bumper I would say it originally had small rear lights. I believe Alfa used to have a factory in SA so this may be their mod for local regs or more likely by a previous owner due to easier availiability of berlina units.
What does the metalwork around the light apertures look like?

Re: 1600 GT Junior

I would like to add that there was an ALFA plant in SA and it was responsible for the CKD or Completely Knocked Down cars. These were the result of some SA law in order to give motives to foreign companies for investments .Only 460 ALFA GT JUNIORS have been produced around 1972.

Re: 1600 GT Junior

I e-mailed the chassis number to Automobilismo Storico Alfa Romeo. According to their documentation files, the chassis number AR 2206339 originally corresponds to an Alfa Romeo GT 1600 Junior RHD (115.05), manufactured on the 15th January 1975 and sold to Alfa Romeo South Africa. The metalwork around the light apertures look like it was designed for the bigger lights.
