starter motor

Hi,
Wonder if anyone can advise on this. The (original) starter motor on my two-litre 105 nord engine (in a GT junior) can only just manage to start the car from cold. It has a fairly high compression. New battery does not help. I seem to remember reading somewhere a starter from an Alfa 75 twin spark will fit and is lighter and geared to give more starting torque. Is this true? will any 75 twin spark starter do (1.8?)or does it have to be the two litre? I know various firms are selling specialist hi-torque starters for well north of £200 when vat is included but I assume a 75 twin spark starter would cost far less.
cheers

Re: starter motor

I was led to believe that there are a different number of teeth on the gear that engages with the starter ring on certain models. If this is true, you need to be careful, otherwise you could end up buying one that won't fit since the gear on the starter motor will be too small or will have the wrong pitch.

Re: starter motor

just a thought, but have you checked your ignition timing? timing that is too advanced (i.e. early) can make it super difficult to start, as the spark is effectively igniting the petrol/air which tries to push the piston back in the opposite direction to the starter motor! I had this problem when I first got my 1750, and sorting the timing fixed it.

timing's also a much easier thing to sort out than replacing starter motor, so hopefully you can save yourself some work

regards

Re: starter motor

Griffo - it seems you are right as price for high torque starters. But - electrical offer a "geared version for 1990> Spiders. Classicsalfa states it fits all 2000 cc engines.

Re: starter motor

Your not on your own , took me two days , 2 batteries and a boost charger to get started , they dont like cold weather .
I was also looking at changing the starter motor to a lighter powerful unit , but £200+ ?
I did find that if the plugs are removed , cleaned and heated gave it that last bit of oooomph to fire up with 10 mins of white smoke . mind you it was minus 2 at the time .

Re: starter motor

Just a thought but have you checked the cable that feeds he starter motor from the battery?

Can't remember if it was the Alfa, but on one car I replaced the cable and it gave the starter another lease of life.

Removing the starter means taking the carbs off so it is worth checking the easy to fix causes first.

Has anyone fitted a new hi-torgue starter, if so does it help with starting from cold?

Re: starter motor

Yes, the starter motor off a 75 2.0 Twin Spark will fit the 2.0 Nord and is a common and beneficial upgrade. The Spider S4 item is probably the same thing.

It's not a straight swap on 1300, 1600 or 1750s because the number of teeth are different.
