surging problem sorted - weber carbs
after a fairly tedious few weeks, the carbs are sorted. lots of helpful suggestions from you guys - thanks for that.
the problem was that the idle jets - too rich, causing surging at very light throttle. at idle, with the too-rich jets, the mixture was o.k., but obviously not under load. the problem got worse with a hot engine. going two jet sizes smaller sorted it; the plugs are a much healthier colour after mixed low-rpm driving. runs sweet now.
the sheared-off screw on the bottom inspection hatch was drilled out and re-tapped, which has fixed the leaking problem too.
