Fuses

I do not think the fuses in my 1972 Spider S2 are the correct rating, in fact I am sure they are not.

The question is what should they be?

According to my handbook the information is as follows:

Fuse 1, 2, 3, 4 Main Devices
Fuse 5 Parking Lights
Fuse 6 Indicating Devices
Fuse 7 LH High Beam
Fuse 8 RH High Beam
Fuse 9 LH Low Beam
Fuse 10 RH Low Beam

What it does not tell me is the rating for each fuse and that is what I need to know.

Thanks.

Re: Fuses

I am told, and have read from multiple sources, that ALL fuses in the block should be rated 8 amp...

Re: Fuses

Thanks Garwood1,

That's interesting because all bar one of the fuses in my car are 8 amp but I have been told the first four should be 25 amp.

As the first four are the main fuses I would expect a rating higher than 8 amps.

That said, my car has 8 amp fuses fitted and that agrees with your comments.

I would be very grateful for more comments from other owners especially if you are able to check what fuses are fitted to your car.

Re: Fuses

I'm the lucky owner of a Spider 1750 1970 S2 and Instruction Book.
It has 10 fuses, too, more or less same pattern, only, fuse 4 and 5 are Parking lights. But again, no nothings about Amp values.
Car is hipernation right now, so I can't check which fuses are fitted.
I would not fit 25 aps fuses right away, I'll buy some 15 amp as backup if one of the 8 amps blew.

Re: Fuses

Hi
Don't fit a higher rated fuse until you know it's the correct one. The fuse is there as the weak link and you may damage whatever the fuse is guarding if you up rate it.Go with the lower rating if its not causing a problem.

Re: Fuses

Fuses are a safety device to protect the wiring, not the load. Since all the output wires on the fusebox output are 1.0mm, which is rated at about 12 amps, all fuses should be 8 amp.

Re: Fuses

That certainly isn't true for all cars and I don't think it is good practice for an Alfa, with more than fragile wiring and switch gear. (Hypothetical example): Would you be happy to use an 8A fuse to burn out a stalled wiper motor (£100), or blow a 2A fuse (50p) instead?

Re: Fuses

You're correct. Not all wires in all cars is 1.0mm. I was referring to the fused output wires from the fusebox in the car in question, an S2 Spider.
Or were you referring that a fuse is to protect the load and not the wire?
