I've taken the tacho out of my 76 Spider S2 just to clean the glass and face - fiddly job opening that bezel!
I've taken a look at back and there was quite a bit of grease around which I've wiped away. I've not touched the actual mechanism. Also the washer at the back is falling apart.
My question is, should I do or replace anything or just leave well alone (BTW it works fine)
The other part of the design I don't understand is the lighting (or lack of) There isn't really anywhere for the light to get through from the bulbs to the front of the panel so no wonder they're dim - strange design!
Although I have removed mine from the dash I am too scared to dismantle the unit... since you have it at this stage is it not worth coating what you can with fresh grease.. and removing the hardened stuff.
What did you use to remove the bezel? it looks tricky to do...
Yes I might re-grease the unit but maybe wait for a bit more advice...
It is a tricky job to remove the bezel - I just used a combination of screwdrivers and flat-headed pliers to lever up the edge
Hope I'll be able to refit it OK!
I was thinking of taking mine off and re-greasing since it makes an annoying tick-tick sound.
How easy was it to remove? Was there enough slack on the rev cable to remove in-situ?
What's the strange looking square inside the case?
Just a thought but perhaps the lights will be brighter now you've wiped away the grease.
I suppose it must work by reflecting light off the inside of the case.
It's a bit tight but there is enough slack to pull the gauge forward and unscrew the cable.
It's fiddly getting the bezel off but just takes patience using a couple of small screwdrivers.
I don't have the unit in front of me now but if it's the part I think you mean, the square inside the case is where the charging light connects into from behind - It has a red lens inside
There's a good thread on the AlfaBB board re LED lights for dials and he suggests coating the inside with reflective tape
I'm also going to try and locate equivalent LED replacement for the existing tiny 2W lamps:
Thanks.
I'll have a go at some point. Speedo too.
Let us know if you find a suitable LED bulb, although I quite like the dull orangish glow!
Don't be tempted to replace the "Heating" bulb with an LED, since it then won't show the 2-speed settings. Might be a problem with the "generator" light too, although to be honest I'm not sure how that works.
I contacted bettercarlighting.co.uk and they have an equivalent for £4.99 + VAT - Apparently it's called a 233 9mm bayonet
Regarding the Orangey glow, yes, I hope they're not too bright!
