Don't ask...

How do I remove/change steering wheel on 1986 Spider?

I have a 1986 Spider QV (see photos!)

I have just purchased a Nardi steering wheel, (with hub adaptor).

Could anyone tell me the correct way to removing my standard steering wheel, please?

(Before I go breaking something)

Thanks

If it doesn't just come off in your hand... you will need a puller. If you haven't got one, try loosening the nut (but leave it on) and then do some three point turns and see if that loosens it.

Does the horn push just pull off without breaking?

They normally do but I'm not famiiar with that exact wheel. Normally they just have some push fit lugs to hold them on.

Re: How do I remove/change steering wheel on 1986 Spider?

Try this if you dare, it works on most car/steering wheel types. Undo the nut untill its flush with the top of the thread on the inner column shaft then using a medium weight lump hammer and a suitable drift (i use an old LDV van kingpin) give the nut one good sharp strike whilst pushing up with your knees from the underside of the wheel rim. The nut should always be kept in place when doing this so that the wheel doesn't fly off and hit you in the face and also to protect the end of the thread on the column shaft.

This is a tried and tested method i've used for years without problems, carried out with care you should not encounter any problems. hope it works.

BTW is Gwen Stefani a pop tart? and therefore the work of the devil, 'cos I like her.....

Gwen Stefani is NOT a Pop Tart.

She is gorgeous and her music moves me.

Pop Tarts are small sandwiches containing red superglue heated to 500 degrees that burn away your soft palate.

Thanks for your help.

I'm disappointed by this constant change of avatar Snoots. The scary clown was far, far better than this skanky, skinny lass.

Maybe your clear out needs an addition.....

Ok, sorry , but you did start it what with having a babe-lishious pop tart as your avatar , and a signature refering to pop tarts being the work of the devil when they are clearly loved by others.
I guess its fair to say the steering wheel is still in place?
If its any help or encouragement, I took the steering wheel off my Berlina to fit my re-furbed one (see steering wheel re-furb thread for pics) just last weekend and it appeared to be undisturbed from when the factory fitted it in 1972. I just slackened the nut a couple of turns and pulled on it whilst rocking it to and fro, top to bottom and side to side and off it came.
ALWAYS REMEMBER TO KEEP THE NUT IN PLACE WHEN PULLING ON THE LOOSE STEERING WHEEL AS REMEADIAL DENTAL WORK CAN PROVE EXPENSIVE!

PS, can you still buy Pop Tarts? or are they a distant 80's memory?
