If anyone is selling ( or aware of one coming on the market) a S4 Spider or indeed a 70's 2000 would you please let me know. I'm looking for a S4 one in absolute top condition, or if an older model, restored.
S2 prices are very variable but you'd probably expect to pay 20 - 25k for a truly immaculate example - I mean one done to concours standard with full resto history from a reputable firm, 15 - 20k for a very nice one and 10 -15k for a good usable example - depending whether you buy it private or dealer, dealers seem to really ladle it on
As your looking at the top end you can afford to take your time and be fussy so go see as many as you can preferably with someone who knows their Spiders, if you spot any down this neck of the woods I'd be happy to help
On the theme of buying a car can anyone assist with what is the best book/manual to buy that gives information and pictures on originality.
I have see Chris Rees's book "the restorers guide, original series" but they appear to be very high prices.
You really need to go and see a few, then you can reference what the book is pointing out, until then its just words and pictures, you wont get to truly know your car until you've owned it for a year or so and asked a million questions on here, which is what we are here for.
Hi Folks, just an update on whats on the market. I went to see a S2 Spider in Lincolnshire. Its on a couple of classic car web sites and at £29.995. Its a total restoration and the web pictures look good . However Parts of it are good buts lots of the engine ancillaries are painted and pitted underneath. The interior bright work is tired The body is not bad but for a recent resto it's not that good and Way over price. The owner is a really nice guy but not aware of the car's failings.
I just thought I mention it to save anyone travelling a long way.
The red one with the cream interior? - that's an awful lot of money for an S2, getting into good Duetto territory, I'd expect it to be concours for that, the good thing is now you've started to view them so can compare them more objectively
Hi Joe, yes you cant beat the hands on inspection. I'm not experienced in Alfa's although I have had two spiders. I have had over 30 classics from E types to MGB's over my very long life (lol) but each marque has its unique problems and I'm really just starting with Alfa's so all help gratefully received
Neil
Hi Folks,
As you know from my thread I'm actively looking for A S4 car. I look at all the sites shown on Google. From anyone's experience is there any other places I should be looking.
You could also check out the auction sites such as Classic Car Auctions, Brightwells, H & H, Anglia Car Auctions etc to see what is coming up. There also may be one or two members of this forum who might be considering selling their S4.
Hi Folks,
I have never really looked at a Spider S3 but it looks interesting. Can anyone advise what are the pros and cons about that marque. Did they make a RHD model
Thanks
Neil
They never made a factory RHD one, many were converted by the aftermarket companies -
pros
cheaper than the other series, potential bargains are out there
better rust proofing than the S1 and 2's
retain the basic pleasure of driving an Alfa Spider
better minor driver controls than the S 2/1's
cons
the looks are not to everyone's taste although the QV is an improvement
RHD not a factory conversion
although cheaper than the other series its seen as the less desirable so more difficult to sell
retain the usual Alfa foibles - although I see that as part and parcel (and pleasure) of owning an Alfa
The US import ones have Bosch injection and the Euro ones retain carbs
I have a Lombarda S3 QV.
The nice details are the full Zender kit (gets rid of that black lip on the boot plus front and rear spoilers-mine has lost the side ones over time) and nice little touches like the (illuminated) Lombarda Insignia on the walnut lower dash to the left of the digital clock (see attached)
I still have the Lombarda stickers in the soft top and the side panel decals (plus original key fob!)
The RHD conversion (from Lombarda) is a seaking one.
Neil,
if I had a spare 20k and was looking for a red RHD spider, this would take my fancy! Maybe something to have a look at..?
good power, great looks, seems to be decently restored (obviously it will not be a concours resto for 20k, that alone would cost 30k+ these days, meaning underneath drivetrain, top paintjob etc)......and it being a 72 will be a factory alfa RHD car, so not stuck together piecemeal like the converted cars. https://www.alfaholics.com/cars-for-sale/road-cars/1972-alfa-romeo-2000-spider/
Many thanks for the steer to the link (car for sale)
I emailed the seller a few weeks ago and it was sold.(sadly).
I'm going to see a S4 at Mortimers Prestige in Billinghurst Garage. The garage has had some good reports on various chat sites. I have spoken to the garage and they are having the drivers seat mended and have given me first refusal. The price is a bit high and there is only one picture up at present but he tell me it just came in.
Cheers
