Hmmm confused alfa purchaser-84 spider

glad to be around a bunch of guys who appreciate a cool and rare auto. i have not purchased an ***** romeo in about 10 years, but yesterday i purchased a 1984 with 118,000 miles, and i'm debating on whether to trust the italian ingineering on a 2700 mile trip back home. i have to fly there in the next day or so to complete the purchase. the guy says he knows very little about the car. only drove it for 15 minutes.. says it drives fine, plenty of power. for some reason, that still worries me. i'v also heard or head gasket problems with this year..I am not sure how to best tell if this is the case with this car when i get there. he says the wipers and the heater motor are not working either. if you have any thoughts or ideas, it would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to AO

I'm afraid I wouldn't dream of attempting such a long journey in a untried car which the seller admits has a few faults! Is he going to fully service it before the drive home? What else will not work? Remember that it's an old car.

Sorry to sound so negative but I wish you well and have lots of fun with it.

Re: confused alfa purchaser-84 spider

Welcome to AO, karmann! Congrats on your purchase.

If the service history of the vehicle is known, I would welcome an opportunity for a 2700 mile drive. If not, I'd feel a lot better if the car had a full service first.

Oh, ***** is the first letter of the Greek ALFAbet, not a car.

Re: confused alfa purchaser-84 spider

I am assuming some information here but here goes:
If you drive out there take a vehicle that will pull a tow dolly. Drive the car and check everything you can before you pay for it and complete the deal. If it checks out then drive it home. If it quits or messes up rent a U haul tow dolly and pull it the rest of the way. Assuming it is a 5 speed, you can put it in neutral and pull it on its back wheels. You can tell alot about the head gasket from the look of the engine. If you are mechanically inclined you should be able to determine alot about the car by looking at it and test driving it. Don't buy it if it doesn't suit you. Sounds like the present owner doesn't knowmuch about it. Don't accept an open title (one without the alleged owner's name on it) Before you make the trip find out if the seller's name is on the title. If its not don't even go. It's an adventure you can talk about for years. Enjoy it if the facts are right. Catch
