Folks, its getting close for my cam belt needing done on my GTV V6. As we dont have any good Alfa specialist in the Aberdeen area i am looking for sugestions where i could get it done.
I have already had a quote from CP garage in Dundee but they seemed to be a little bit on the expensive side!
Quite happy to travel a little bit and get this done properly, so looking forward to your suggestions.
Car will be booked in with these guys end of next month to get the cam belt, water pump and a service including changing the gear box oil and the brake fluid
Spoke to the owner Stewart a few times on the phone and he seems very knowledgable and helpful
Still currently trying to negotiate the price with them. And yes it included the idlers and tensioners plus 2 x rocker gaskets and 6 spark plug seals etc.
Really keen to get them to do the work as i have heard good things about them!
They also offered me one of there Fiat 500 courtesy cars until the job is completed.
I have never used McLennans as am new to Alfa ownership but a few of the guys at my work that have GT's and Minto's rate them, am using Labinjoh Ltd for all my work just now and am finding him really good, some nice cars in his yard mmmmm. lol
Can certainly recommend McLennans. They've carried out loads of work for us on Alfas, Lancias & Fiats over the years. Be prepared for a wait sometimes as they're always busy, which is good.
I'm another who would happily recommend Mclennans. I've been using them on my various Alfas for the last 15 years and they also did great work on my old Lotus Excel a few years back. Stewart is a dyed in the wool Alfa man and what he doesn't know about them aint worth knowing. Unlike a main dealer, he's always happy to have a blether and talk about your car, explaining any issues. Always very busy though which i suppose says it all
My waterpump is broken when drive back from Ireland with my "new" GTV.
My mechaniker, who hate the alfas offered me 600 for cambelt, tensioners, waterpump change(parts 245cambelt kit,85waterpump, rest is labour).
600 seems like a fair price given the cost of parts and the amount of work involved. BTW, most mechanics hate all makes of car, because modern engines are all about electronics. I have a brother who runs a small garage, he always says he hates and loves them all at the same time. Their murder to work in, but bring in the cash
290 miles, 16 hours, a day's shopping in edinburgh, oh and a few quid lighter my GTV has had it cam belt replaced and a full service from Mclennans in Edinburhgh.
If the weather's good, you can walk down Roslin Glen and up to the chapel, see if you can find the Holy Grail. Very picturesque. Otherwise, the bus goes right past the door and will drop you on North Bridge at the corner of Princes Street.
I used to live in Roslin, a lifetime ago, and McLennans kept my old 33 on the road. They rebuilt the front suspension for my Duetto, too, although that did take a year or so. (I wasn't pushing them to get it done, as nothing else on the car was ready then.)
