Gaag away back in the 70's my late faither and his 2 pals went to Motherwell Tech up behind Fir Park .After a yaer of training they were able to check the oil and other menial tasks.afer a year and a hlaf he could change spark plugs ....If it was an alfa V6 Busso he would still be at night school.
I learned the hard way with a help from a few friends when all went pear shaped and bit off more than I could chew in 1969.all uphill since then.
But an auld banger and a haynes manual and as oor 166 eshy would say a big Halfords socket set and get beasted in.
Stu the fiat broached this subject a long time ago but his car went on fire.I hope you don't follow suit.
Gutted! Always fancied a 166, would've been nice to have one to play with as a project!
To be honest, I can already do most of the things the courses I've found tell you - i.e. the basic stuff like changing spark plugs, fitting an exhaust, changing oil & air filters etc.
My end goal is that i'd be able to do just about everything on my own - including belt changes etc.
I suppose I know enough right now to just not be dangerous... maybe I should keep it like that
I think the amount of work one can actually do on your own car is very much dependant on the car and the availabilty of technical information on it.
I only really got into DIY car maintenance following the purchase of my Mk1 MX5....and only because the car is so simple and there are at least two full strip down and rebuild manuals available. And the fact that it is a second car which if I screw it up won't mean I'd be without a car.
These car maintenance courses tend to be generic and very basic......and certainly not vehicle specific enough for an ALFA.
