Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

I bought a flat in Knightswood about 5 years ago. It was not a posh area by any means. but It seemed a decided hard working sort of place. It was filled with people walking scruffy dogs at all times of day and night.

how ever now it seems that almost every night there are "people" out side in the street shouting at each other. Has anyone ever been able to understand a Glaswegin shouting? There was somebody stabbed to death a few streets away and I think its changed the area.

I was walking home today with a bag (that I got free from a conference). I was in Anniesland when the strap snapped and the bag fell to the ground. then I heard somebody running behind me so I just turned around and stood on my bag and watched this man trying to pull the thing out from underneath me. I can't say I was impressed

What does every body else think? is Glasgow changing for the worse? Or am I just being grumpy?

Cheers Stuart

it isn't just Glasgow im afraid, every city will have "wild" spots, the problem seems to be that these spots are growing

Glasgow is a wild spot

They can knock it all down and make it look flash but unfortunately they just put the mindless morons back in again, look at Tradeston (Kingston Quay specifically) for a perfect example of new vision gone wrong.

As a Glaswegian in exile in Paisley doing missionary work with the locals I'm going to give this one some thought before I respond.

Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

I went to Glasgow 3 weeks ago for the first time in 12 years. The difference in the city is amazing and Glaswegians should be proud of it. Alas, on the whole people only ever seem to change for the worse where ever they they live. It's not just Glasgow for sure, some small towns are worse, less space to spread the scum is the reason I reckon. An American visitor that we had was overheard saying "this place is like one huge trailer park", meaning our town. I found it hard to disagree when I thought about.

Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

Well i have to be honest after spending most of my life living and working in and around Glasgow that it has never actually got any worse than years ago, but it has never got better either, I drove buses in the Housing estates in Glasgow and Taxis too and could tell you stories that would make a war veteran weep, maybe im just a cynic but you could not pay me a £1,000,000 to move within a hundred miles of it ever again. Its just a pity that the genuine nice people in the city will always be outnumbered by the low lifes. I still visit the area but am always happiest on my way out of it.

No offence to any genuine Glaswegians meant.

Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

Interesting read.

I'm now wanting to move out of the area. I think I want to leave Glasgow altogether and just commute into work.

Sack that, I moved from Milngavie to the city centre to avoid the commute...nothing more depressing than Glaswegian public transport. I do miss being next to the country though but it's still only 15 minutes away.

As much as this city is full of ar3eholes I still love it. It would take a lot for me to move away but I've considered it, more because of the state this Island has become rather than just Glasgow.

Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

Studied, worked in and lived around glasgow for the best part of 30-odd years. I've worked all over the city and never felt that threatened that a good hello won't sort. Also spent a fair bit of time in many other towns and cities around the UK and can think of few that are better than Glasgow and many that are much worse places to be.

Ray, I find your view of the city hard to understand. The good folk are most certinaly not outnumbered by the low-lives.

That is kind on my point. I used to feel safe in Glasgow. hell in 2002 I use to walk through Maryhill at anytime of day or night. It was never a nice place but I felt safe. Some how now the nutters feel more unhinged.

Hmmm....in the 50's & 60's knife and axe weilding gangs used to roam the streets of Glasgow (so I'm told by my parents)....but at least they mainly used to seek out and take on other knife & axe weilding gangs.

I think the big difference now is that 'anybody' is fair game to these, often drug fuelled, ASBO card carriers.

I must say though that I'm kinda glad my lad's night out days in the city are effectively over and I'm happier having a good evening at home with friends than out waiting at late night bus stops or taxi ranks.

Now......where is my Horlicks mug?
