Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

When I used to go on the road with my band we used to love playing Glasgow, the people were always friendly the venues were ace! (especially the 13th note club, now called barfly i think?) only bit I didn't like was if staying over walking through the streets late, but that is the same anywhere and to be honest the only trouble ive been in is Dundee

Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

Stu

I spent many a summer in my Grannies flat on the 9th floor of Arthur, one of the high flats in Knightswood (when I wasn't visiting the others in Cambuslang).

What can I say, it was a great place then, a golf course across the road, a park and boating pond, 20 story flats to drop things off, a boys dream as far as I was concerned.

I still work in Glasgow on a daily basis and, as with other parts of Scotland, the problems have not got any worse in my opinion, just more obvious. Two reasons I believe, drugs and late night opening.

Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

I live on the other side of the golf course and keep one of my Grannies in Cambuslang.

Knightswoood was and still is a nice area. As I type this at 10.15 on a saturday night I and report that all is peaceful. I hope it stays that way.

Cheers Stuart

Here, here. It's defo a case of the scum getting louder, rather than worse. There is a breakdown of respect, but that's all over the world (not just Glasgow, Scotland or the UK).

I blame the parents.... kids, youths & young adults these days have very little respect for anything unless it's important to them.

As for Glasgow... It's no worse than Edinburgh or any other city, I live in Stirling these days... all cities have there good bits and bad.

Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

I've been lucky enough to live in a few countries for extended periods of time (years). And sadly, Glasgow is without a doubt the worst major city I have visited. There's no beauty, no friendliness, little culture, everything is extremely commercialised and soulless, and holy **** is the food terrible.

Perhaps it's a personal thing; maybe the easy going life of Italy suites me better, or the cultured cities of France, but it would be a cold day in hell before I lived in Glasgow.

Sadly I am studying there for another two years :-( What ****es me off the most is that very few people complain about the problem, even fewer try to do something about them. There's no underlying reason Glasgow should be the **** hole that it is.

But like I said, maybe it's a personal thing.

Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

I may be being a bit Naive - but I have gone up to Glasgow many a time for weekends for a bit of a bender

And love the place - yes certain area's are depressing and run down - but so is the majority of large cities in the UK.

I love the people and have never had any grief - and find that most people are genuinly warm and funny...

OK have not been up there for 3 years now - so much could have changed...but was up there a year or so back for business and it still held the same charm....

I guess its one of those things the grass is always greener

I think Glasgow is finding it hard to strike a ballance at the moment its either rundown or all new and plasticly with a starbucks and a Subway install in every street.

On the plus side a good city to move around it. (good roads, and underground etc)

It is not the best place in the world, but neither is is the worst place I've been to.

I'm not an expert on civic finances but one of the visible problems around here is that the City centre looks very run down. In a city with the scale of deprivation that exists I can only hope that the cash is being spent on good works. So in that way I would suggest that there are underlying reasons for the place to be so dowdy.

Another two years and you will love the place.

Re: Glasgow... Is it going down the pan or is just me?

Glasgow is a fairly nice place compared with where I used to live ... Nail Bomber alley in Farnborough, yes I lived about 7 doors down from the London Nail bomber ... oh and my next door neighbour slit his wifes throat, then went down the pub, made she he said hello to everyone, then when he got home phoned the police and said "shock horror my wife's been killed"
