Best Drives in Scotland

If you had to pick any road, or route, - short or long - in Scotland to recommend to another Alfa owner where would it be? And why?

I promised to start off with a suggestion so I'm going for the road from Gifford to Duns past the Whiteadder reservoir.

It not the best road surface in some spots, and there is the odd cattle grid, but the views are spectacular and there are some nice bendy bits. Plus it's often pretty quiet.

I think the AA might object on copyright grounds here but I'll have a look at the named book and see what's on offer.

Good plan - but it would still need to be independently verified by an Alfa driver to qualify.

I'm looking for somewhere to play at the weekend.

Re: Best Drives in Scotland

Oooh I have a few.
A82 north of Fort William up towards Kyle etc
Blairgowrie to Glen Shee
Kippen Moor (Fintry to Kippen, not far from Glasgow)
Tyndrum to Oban
Crow road Lennoxtown to Fintry (short but good)
A lot in the borders. Just get hold of a road book from the Jim Clark Memorial

Re: Best Drives in Scotland

A837 and it's relitives (A83#) around Sutherland (A837 needs to be part of the route though, as it passes along the Assynt Valley). Just the most beautiful place Ive ever seen. Include the A834 and the Kylesku bridge and your life is complete

Re: Best Drives in Scotland

A82-Tyndrum, tyndrum to Oban, Oban to Ballachullish, Ballachullish to Forth William, Fort William to Ardnamurchan, Ardnamurchan via Assynt and along the north coast to Durness and Thurso, Thurso to INverness via Latheronwheel, Inverness to Fort William, Fort William to Crainlarrach, Crainlarrach to Callendar, Callendar to Stirling, Stirling to Home.

That must be the best long-weekend drive in the UK and one of the best in Europe.

Re: Best Drives in Scotland

Now that's nice. You're getting Kylesku bridge, but your missin the Assynt valley, best experienced East to West to get the best views of Ben-Mor-Assynt. Scotlands very own Sugarloaf Mountain :flag:

Re: Best Drives in Scotland

Fraser's route sounds tempting. Next time I've a meeting in Thurso I'll be tempted to take the long way back.

I'm not sure this thread is helping us with a circular route for a day out in South Scotland. Perhaps I should ask the North Scotland forum to see if their favourites are down this way.

Don't miss the drive along the Assynt Valley though Lesley. You'll regret it

Re: Best Drives in Scotland

The best drive in scotland is from my work to my house on a Friday evening.

One interesting drive is the road through the Ochils via Sheriffmuir. Great scenery but probably best avoided if on 18" or over rims. Also single track road with very few passing places. Havnt had the courage to try it the GT yet.

I done these last year, excellent bits of road. I ended up out there for 3 hours (looking for the windfarm) - popping out somewhere near Falkirk

I was gonna something similar to that route recently but the going in the opposite direction...I think I might have to save up and do this as I feel I've not seen enough of this country.

A82 from Dumbarton to Fort William. It is a great road but can get terrible in the summer, particularly up Loch Lomond-side.
