Cam Belt Service

So I've bitten the bullet and finally decided to sort out the noisy tensioner on the Alfa. Tried to get it reset but hasn't seemed to work.

I've choosen Franco's, they got great customer service and seem to know what they talking about. They got a couple Alfa's in the shop which they are working on.

I'm waiting for the quote to come through tomorrow and wanted to see if anyone else has recently had theirs done.... so the Q

Have you had your cambelt done and if so what was the price??

Also is it correct that a V6 doesn't have a variator? this was told to me by a unrealted mech who also quoted me on the service.

I am getting my GTA's cambelt done in about 2weeks (taking in the Giulietta in for 60000km) next week.

Belts, bearings the whole package including a new water pump with metal impeller and labour comes to around R13k

Well the one quote I got so far is 6300 without water pump (1150 extra incl. the pump). Are you getting yours done at the agents?

The best will be to phone Gerhard you know i am not in the motor trade
You can ask Jzee what his car's cost with the cams and a couple of other things.
R7000 sounds a bit low but all depends on what you replace. R13 000 probably includes a set of cams as well.

Not bad at all.
What about the aux belt with all its bits?
Some quotes look high but all depends on what they replace, Perreby's quote probably include the water pump, aux belt, cam and crank pulleys, air cleaner, oil filter and all other service items as well. Which will make the R13000 more or less accurate.

Be careful when you compare prices.
I know that Gerhard for instance quote for everything and not only for a cam belt, tensioner and idlers on its own since it is good practice to change all of it.
But if his customer only want parts of it done so be it. Unless they insist on not replacing the tensioners or something like that then they can have it done under a tree somewhere.

GTV V6 Turbo, Q2, Eibach, Koni, and lots more
916 2.0 Spider what have I done
Triumph Trophy 1200 to counter the fuel prices.

Turbo.. Spoke to the dealership. Their quote includes everything... Aux belt, pulleys, cambelt, tensioners, waterpump with metal impeller.. The fullhouse...

As they said, do it properly or don't do it at all

Thats great advice! So in your opnion you would look to do the aux belt and associated tensioners, pulleys etc. at the same time? A normal service has already been done 2000km ago so not that necessary.

To be honest it's a mine field when trying to get a decent price for those who don't know exactly what should be done! I've tried to get as much research done as possible and I have all the repair manuals for the 3.0 V6 but theoretical knowledge is nothing without knowing what practically should be done. (excuse the waffle but I have just come out of a strategic planning meeting)

Yes let them do the Aux with accessories as well. I have seen aux belts getting into the cam belt and it’s not a pretty sight. Mostly happens on TS motors but why take a chance.
Changing the crank gear is a good call since they are cheap and take a lot more punishment than the cam pulley’s. Have seen a couple with bad wear after 100 000km. And a new belt that’s not seating properly could obviously fail prematurely.
Rather safe than sorry.
And they shouldn’t charge additional labor for the Aux since the have to remove it to get to the cam belt.

@ Brendon - PM sent re: enquiring with Robin

@Turbo - I asked Alfa and they said that they will check the aux belts and associated tensioners etc. and only change if they need replacing. I'm getting the feeling its better to get them to do the whole bang at one time.

I'm busy trying to see if my Motorite warranty will cover the bust tensioner and if so I will use that saving to do the aux belt.

normal wear i doubt if they will pay.
I would suggest that you do all of it at once and get it over with.
