R29 000...

My turbo decided to seize up. Went for a great Sunday breakfast run with friends then on the way back home I lost all boost.

I've brought it into Arnold Chatz for the 90 000KM service and they first diagnosed the turbo issue. Then delivered the knock out punch that the cambelt isnt covered by the service plan... and that is another R6k.

They are taking photos and going to submit a good will claim to Fiat, but even at 50% this is going to hurt the pocket beyond what I can afford.

My plan is this:

Wait for Fiat to come back to Arnold Chatz and tell me if they will cover part of the cost and if so how much.
At the same time I have phoned up Turbo Nutters to see how much it will cost for the same parts and labour.

I am also investigating getting the turbo refurbished. Any advice in this regard would be welcome. {Just been told by Henri from ARCOP that this is a BAD idea and can end up costing more in the long run.}

Its time take the turbo to a turbo repair place, let them fix it for much less, and also do some trickery to it.

There are lots of things FCA can do better but from what I've seen they really stand by their products. I've seen them do a goodwill claim once on a GQV that skipped a service, back when the service interval was 30 000km. So the car did almost 60 000km without an oil change. The turbo popped because the oil feeder pipe was blocked with gunk. They would have been perfectly within their rights to reject the claim but they didn't, they replaced the turbo. Try that with some other manufacturers.......

That's good to hear , I also noticed that the cambelt is not covered. Mine is 4 and a half years old now with 60k on so best get that changed , will probably go to Turbonutters as the service plan end soon anyway

Does it make sense to service a turbo before it starts having issues?
Yes, It can save bucks in the long run. It can run a bit more efficiently to spool up a bit quicker, that you have more power earlier, thus need less loud pedal input, that will relate to better fuel mileage. Have you investigated swirl flap delete / Exhaust Gas Recirculate delete / Diesel Particulate Filter delete?
