LED Headlights

I'm really not a fan of the LED headlight strips you see on Audi's. It's not so bad on the brake lights but the front is just tacky.

I notice that the 149GTA is shown on the blog with them, what does everyone think of these kind of lights?

Re: LED Headlights

My understanding is that the current problem with
high intensity white LEDs is they are quite difficult
to manufacture and get them all emitting exactly
the same colour white light.

So they will be quite expensive for the near future.

You may even have to buy them in matched pairs
unless you want different coloured headlights.

Coming to all new cars soon I believe, some sort of EU directive.

My wifes new A3 will have them, she thinks they look nice.

If it's an EU Directive I would imagine it's safety related, and I don't think they offer any improved safety over side lights

Re: LED Headlights

I like the led's of the audi but i dont like them on this alfa i am sorry to say i dont like the look of this 149GTA! "come the innovator, not the pale immitator" put Xeons on em. Am i alone on this i think it looks a bit soft more aggression is needed on styling. Like the new scooby thats looks well cr@p sort of like a mazda 323 shape.

Re: LED Headlights

Better get used to LED sidelights as every new car will have them soon, infact i doubt new cars will have any filament bulbs at all!

Audi got in there first, but yep im glad Alfa are following early on.

I think they look tacky myself. They remind me of those ‘snake’ lights.

Re: LED Headlights

Some real world info on high intensity white LEDs:

LED technology - White LEDs

LED headlights for cars are in the pipeline, notably through the work of Germany's Osram, which is producing a range of multi-die packages that are close to producing enough light for road illumination. LED bicycle headlights are already available.

So not quite there yet. So You won't be seeing
LED headlights just yet.

That's interesting because we have LED headlights on our HST's, and they're really great. Would have though it easy to get a light powerful enough for road use

I think some of the newer French trains use
LEDs for compartment lighting too.

Maybe it's the higher voltages available
that mean they can use a different LED
material/technology?
