As for the minimum wage rising... I think it would work in the short term, but that might fuel inflation even further.
I also heard a rumour that all households in the EU will have to pay an annual green tax, possibly between £500 and £1000 a year, on top of other taxes.
I am not sure how true that is, but I think there will be uproar if that happens.

Re: Another rise!!!
I read an article today pointing to the city boys driving the price of crude oil up, as they have screwed the housing market over and are not making money from that now. Nice one.

Re: Another rise!!!
I read something along similar lines Eddie and the real price is somewhere around $80 a barrel. They have increased production, but stocks are building up and that there is to much oil at the moment. Lets hope the over supply will drop prices soon

I read that as well. I think they call it speculative investment.
They buy up most of the stock, sit on it until the price rises then sell it for a big profit.
They should be banned from this sort of behaviour with commodities, as its the general public that suffer in the end.

Re: Another rise!!!
Its not the uniform that bothers me... Its being away from home, and I am not sure I would be able to put up with the dicipline that the military require.
Then there is the small issue of going to war and being shot at.

Re: Another rise!!!
More rises today, oil now above the $131 mark.
You do all seem to be missing the main point when it comes to the cost of our fuel at the forecourt. Oil is at record highs, its going up. What do you want the government to do, make a loss? I'm sure that would be great for the country/EU
Yes the price of oil is mostly based on speculation, but at present there is a supply problem. The bubble may burst and fall to a more sustainable price of around $90-$100. But at present the original Goldman Sachs price target sounds achievable.
It is, however, quite hard to sympathise with someone who complains about the cost of their commute when it's in a 20vt
All these rises are great for me btw, I don't use my car for a commute and I own gold stocks (gold is near record highs at mo) and oil stock
Out of curiosity is there any Investors here?

Re: Another rise!!!
I'm actually waiting for a "THE COST OF FOOD" thread. Again the cost of the raw materials has rocketed, is it not obvious that the food on our shelves will also go up?
But now I'm going way off topic

This may sound like a silly question but how exactly does a government make a loss on fuel, when it doesnt drill, refine or transport the stuff in anyway shape or form???? Surely even if they took away all taxes, vat and duty, and were therefore not getting any revenue from it....they still wouldnt be making a loss as they are not shelling out in the first place......money for nothing if you ask me

Seeing as I have to state the obvious:
lets say it costs us £1, 50p went to the fuel company 50p to the government. If the fuel companys then started charging 75p the government would have to increase the price we pay for them to maintain there profit. So, if it remained at £1 the government would only be making 25p, 50% less than before. Hence losing money
*These figures are not accurate*
Next our ABC's

Re: Another rise!!!
Yes but you cant lose money if what you are charging is 100% profit with no costs.....if I have something that cost me nothing and i charge you for it then its 100% profit, therefore if i just give it to you for nothing then I am not making a loss, just not making any money. I think you are confusing profits and losses with increases and decreases to previous accounts
Also if the fuel company puts up to 75 pence and government stays at 50 pence they are not losing their profits, they are staying the same. What i have a problem with is that as well as the fuel company costs going up, the goverment is also increasing its cut as well, so we are hit with a double whammy

Re: Another rise!!!
I know what your saying, but the money the government are making isn't going into someones back pocket (I think) its carefully planned into the budget. So any money lost through reducing the duty on fuel will have a huge knock-on effect on spending somewhere (maybe education or health). Thats why i look at it as making a loss if they reduced the duty.
If, however, the government are increasing the duty then thats a bit out of order. But i'm not sure how they work it.

From what i have been told (the old man works in the middle east for Kuwait oil company dealing with contract prices etc....) from the increased prices they are receiving it seems that a lot of the increase in fuel prices is not going to the oil companies and therefore can only be going to the government as they are really the only other ones to get any kind of cut

As for the Goldman Sachs thing, well, it was actually raised by another member in a different thread. I'm getting my threads confused again.

Re: Another rise!!!
What are the chances of gold and oil prices taking a dive? Just as tech stocks did in 2001? I suppose there will always be some demand for oil and gold though.
I made a few thousand quid on tech stocks whilst they were booming as I was working for a fibreoptic company with a employee share purchase scheme.

Yes there is always that risk, but i believe these two to be pretty safe
You could of put money into property, which 12months ago seemed a solid investment, whoops
But where were we? ah yes rises. Oil just under $134 now expect more fuel costs
